Hey Everyone,

Stefanie with Sierra Wildlife Rescue here again. I now have 20 fancy pigeons that now have a clean bill of health and need to be placed in happy healthy forever homes. They all are finishing their molt and some are sneaking in an egg or two. I'm trying to post some pics in my gallery and can't figure out how to post any here so maybe someone can help me.

Anyways, if anyone has a wonderful home and an open heart for these lovely birds please let me know. I really would like ...

We found a pigeon Sunday November 8, that had been stuck by a car on the right wing and face. We rushed him to the SPCA, where they informed us that they'd euthanize him because of the injuries. We requested a few moments to say our good-byes and decided to clean his face using a little water. To everyone's surprise he tried to drink and after we picked up a dropper he actually drank some water.

The girl at the SPCA told use that if we left him there he'd have no choice but if we took him home ...

The horror continues but in the meanwhile I have no time any more to be in shock.

While Willy is improving slowly, eating again and drinking I am confronted with a new horror: Pina has PMV.

It started on Tuesday evening. She came home, astonishingly quite clumsy when she tried to land on one of her favourite places on the closet. Later on she seemed to be nervous and started to look at the ceiling a couple of times. At that point I was not very worried yet but I found it strange.

My newest little rescue found last Saturday is a baby feral no more than 4/5 weeks old.

When I found him or rather when my dog Pookie found him, he was grounded, unable to fly, very, very thin and weak, half his tail feathers gone and had an awful looking eye injury. I began syringe feeding him Kaytee, cleaned the eye, applied neosporin, and put him on amoxicillin as per Charis's instruction. AS the weekend passed the eye injury became worse and looked absolutely awful. Yesterday I arranged ...

As some of you would know, I stay in an apartment and feed a flock of ferals at my window ledge. All the rescues me and Dev have done so far (around 5 of them) have involved finding pigeons in a very critical state with the exception of Mito.

I have noticed that in all these cases the birds seem to be suffering from some kind of severe respiratory infection or viral infection. I came to this conclusion because all of them had their beaks clogged, discharge from their eyes, eyes infected, ...

Treatment:

Antibiotics are indicated with Baytril, Amoxicillin or Sulfas being commonly recommended. One needs to consider what is or might be the primary disease.

Note: Amoxicillin is my first choice of antibiotics when "shooting from the hip". It is gentle on the pigeon and is the least expensive of the good antibiotics. Use 3 Grams per gallon for about 7 days.

Since its suppose to rain for the next couple of days Birdy will be in the house, I can keep asn eye on him just to make sure he's settled, the wkend is going to be warmer & sunny so we will introduce him into the loft then.

I picked up a bird yesterday from the avian vet who treats my birds. A young hen was rescued in New York City with severe string feet. The vet removed all the visible string. She was not positive that there is no more in the deep cut in the worse foot. She told me to soak the feet daily to see if that would loosen anything left. The poor bird has lost 2 toes on one foot, one toe on the bad foot. She's eating ok. Is there anything else I can do for the feet? She does have some use of the bad foot ...

Here's the big question: should foods that (apparently) aggravate cold sores, caused by the herpes virus be withheld for PMV patients? Which translates as 'do all virus infections follow similar patterns?'

This discussion was initiated by my daughter, on witnessing first hand the ups and downs of the disease in Sammy, and especially the fact that he always convulsed more after eating.

'I think he shouldn't be having peas', she said. 'They aggravate viral conditions.'

So yesterday ...

Muffin went right for them and began bringing them to Ladybird on their nest. I left the room. Ten minutes later I heard a noise. My set-up isn't geared for able bodied pigeons to live permanently. The ones I have are all unreleasable and disabled in some way, so as I know they have ...

He got closer to her and realized she still had string on her feet. As you can see, the string had already done its damage. He took her off the street and sent her up to the Birdbarn.

While Penny Lane was recuperating, she had another recent rescue Fredrick keeping a close eye. During the day, I would bring her cage out for sun, and Fredrick would hang around ...

Two more sick pigeons (from the park) today.

One didn't make it, passed away in a matter of minutes. He was a very young adult, just skin and bone, very dehydrated, with a lump in his crop. As it was an extremely hot day, I didn't warm him, just gave him some hydrating solution, but I could tell that wouldn't be enough. As I can't do sub-q, I was about to try the emergency hydration through the vent I read about in PT once, but there was no time. :(

It's so strange... I found him 'roosting' ...

I've just brought home a pigeon with the most horrible leg fracture -- so much so his knee is twisted 180º. It's a miracle he's alive!

The toes on the broken leg are almost black, but not the lower leg itself, so there must be blood circulating still. It doesn't look to me like the fracture happened today, as there is only a little dried blood and the knee is one big ball of infection.

For all that he still puts up a fight, eats and drinks.

I've given him Metacam ...

It was obvious she had a wing injury that had healed over. I took her to a local rehabber to have it checked out. After removing a few small feathers a horrific abscess was discovered at the bend of her wing, which appeared to have gone untreated. ...

McGee was a stray bird found by someone who thought the bird was injured as he couldn't fly. The good Samaritan brought McGee to an animal hospital who in turn gave the bird to my friend Debbie, a wildlife rehabber. It turned out McGee wasn't injured at all, his wings were clipped! He was also completely hand tame and people bonded.

I believe McGee was probably raised from a baby and then released into the wild by someone who really didn't know the right way to do that. He doesn't ...

Sixteen months ago, a pigeon couple, whom we namd Big Pidgee and Little Pidgee, moved into and laid eggs in a flower pot on our sixth-floor balcony while we were upcountry. We allowed them to stay, eventually providing them with a roomier flower box and fresh water.

From April 9, 2009 to April 11, 2009 I treated her with Baytril thinking that she had Salmonellosis which turned out to be not the case. The really visible and sudden improvement in her condition came when Matilda instructed me to de-worm her, too, with Ivermectin. I administered Ivermectin (de-wormer) on April 10, 2009. The worms or worm eggs don't show up in every fecal sample and often repeated sampling is needed to identify the worms...often there is more than one variety. ...

     A POX ON PIGEON SPIKES!!

Today when I went to feed my flock of farels are the park, two of them are limping badly. One is very distinctive (a brown speckle) and he had not been limping prior to today. I cannot help but wunder if he and the other pij have injured their feet on those disgusting spikebelts that are erected as HUMANE PIGEON CONTROL DIVICES, when they are not! They were close to me and I was able to see that they have no evident injury (all toes are there, no cuts visible, ...

Phoenix is going to tell his own story.

I am a small white Ivory ring neck dove and I look just like this. Well almost.

I was born on June 30th, 2008. I lived outside in a cage with my Mom and Dad.

The day before I turned 1 month old I was attacked. I don't know what attacked me because it was dark outside.

But I do know I was hurt terribly. When it got light I looked to my side and my wing was gone. I was very scared.

Why did this happen to me?

It happened because my home ...

Bath day for PMV birds

Most of my birds are PMV survivors. Once recovered, they remain handicapped to some extent for life. One thing I noticed though is that baths calms them and helps their recovery. They enjoy enormously bathing. Even the ones that act stressed when I place them in the bathtub, in a matter of seconds stress is forgotten.

I fill 30~40 mm water in the cat litter box and of course always supervise them.

It is dark already since nearly 2 hours but I heard a flapping sound outside. Hoping that Pina decided to come home - she is gone again after she was here inside today nearly for the whole day - I saw a foreign pijji sitting in front of the water bowl, carefully checking where the liquid started (reminded me of a blind person trying to fumble for things) and drinking. After finishing the bird flew off again. It was definitely not Pina.

How strange is that?

I mean it is completely dark besides ...

It's the stormy season again, and today there have been winds gusting between 70 - 80 along the south coast. I face west, and get the wind right off the sea from SW direction, and that's hard on the birds hanging out across the street. They hate flying over in these conditions, as they have little control if a strong gust catches them when they approach the balcony. It's difficult to cling to the railing, and some don't manage to get a grip at all.

If I open the door, they don't know if ...
