Well, after a few weeks of peace in my little loft things went today!

To make a long story short, McGee and his girl (Waffles) decided to make a nest on a large ledge over the loft door. I thought they had picked out a different nest area lower down. But I guess they like the higher up ledge better. The problem is, Waffle's dad Penny has been hanging out on this ledge with his two daughters for the last few months. The three of them sleep there at night. Penny tried to throw McGee off ...

Today I was in the bird room when Muffin flew to my shoulder. He was trembling so I knew he wanted something. When I noticed there was no nest materials on the desk, I went and got some from the box of tobacco stalks. I broke them up into thirds as they are quite long. Muffin went right for them and began bringing them to Ladybird on their nest. I left the room. Ten minutes later I heard a noise. When I went to look, Muffin was in the box of tobacco stalks, rummaging around for more twigs. He ...

McGee was a stray bird found by someone who thought the bird was injured as he couldn't fly. The good Samaritan brought McGee to an animal hospital who in turn gave the bird to my friend Debbie, a wildlife rehabber. It turned out McGee wasn't injured at all, his wings were clipped! He was also completely hand tame and people bonded.

I believe McGee was probably raised from a baby and then released into the wild by someone who really didn't know the right way to do that. He doesn't ...

As I was cleaning Malio began gathering some and taking them to Sadie.

Since I haven't taken any pictures in ages I decided to stop cleaning ( ) and see if I could get a couple shots.

Here's one. A couple more will follow in another thread.

Some of you may remember that Don and I took in a little feral rescue a couple of months ago. He has a badly splayed leg, and couldn't walk or even stand. He lives in a cage in our living room, and visits with us everyday. We practice flying, and try to help him to strengthen his good leg, as he needs to learn to stand on it in order to fly. And I wanted to post this update on our very special little bird.

It's interesting to see the wide variety in nests my birds build. Some use only a few twigs. Some like lots of feathers. Penny is the champ nest builder here. He and his hen nest on the floor in a corner since his hen can't fly. When she is getting ready to lay, he goes into a frenzy of nest building. He zooms around grabbing every piece of nest material he can find. He gets very agitated when he runs out. And he can't get enough! He'll be waiting for me impatiently at the loft door when I bring ...

Last winter a sweet little pigeon hen was placed with us, her name is Pinkie.

The owners wanted her to eventually be put into one of the lofts so she could pair up & live happily ever after. Since she was an inside bird and I always like to keep new birds seperate from the flocks, we kept her in our living room. She bonded with me very quickly & had the run of the house when we were home.

Dolly loves feathers. That's a fact!!

Not only the ones on his back but ones he can add it his and Dumpling's nest.

He scouts the aviary looking for the larger feathers that the others have lost.

I have found some of Beautiful's feathers that are outside the aviary that I think Dolly will accept, so I'll call him and he flies across the aviary, takes the feather from me and then flies back to his nest and deposits the feather.

Here are a couple of their 'feather' nests.

How amazing these pijjies could understand that their pij mama is sick. I was sick last nite and was just sitting in the dining area sipping tea for an hour. They hang out with me the whole time, didn't fly around the house which is unusual. One would just fly to their water area and comes back to the table where I was sitting by. I talk to them like crazy, they look at me listening. They're just amazing and entertaining.

This one is Floyd, named by Ben, the boy who found him standing around in a field doing not much of anything, and brought him home.

Floyd is a 2009 racer (now ex-racer!) from Bristol, only about 75 miles from where he was found but who knows where he'd flown from. Not sure whether Floyd was just tired out, or maybe had a near miss with a hawk. He's lost some tail feathers, and looks like maybe a little feathering from his head. He couldn't fly at that stage, but can now take off across ...

That is what the owner of this pretty one said when he was contacted this morning.

He is a dear tame little thing! He squeaks, but his band is a yellow NPA 05 one, so I am not sure whether he is young or old.

Any ideas about his breed?

Mini Pidge, one of John\'s PMV survivors has been a single Mum for some time now. We think that she thinks that Kermit is her mate, but he has never taken his turn at egg sitting, because his real mate is Glory, so that is a job that poor Mini does alone.

Today I noticed a large glossy male pigeon sitting on her eggs, looking as pleased as punch. He is Oily Ollie, whose mate Juvie died last summer. Great! I thought, they have found each other...but no, Ollie has found the ...

So I've come to a cross roads with the birds. I love having them out and about, pooping on everything and having a wonderful time. My concern is that we don't have screens for our windows nor out patio door (and we live in the desert, so having everything open when it's nice is needed, esp. with 5 indoor cats [re: cat pans!]). So, my thought is to clip their wings so they can't fly out the door. but I am not sure if I should do it? They don't attempt to go for the open window (there is usually ...

Actually, in the future I'll have to be more discreet, as one of my more sensitive birds, Kane, couldn't be caught to put out in the aviary without chasing him all over, ...

Well, I was sitting on the stone bench outside the aviary, idly watching the birds doing their busy thing, when Hawkeye flew up to the wire and clung on level with me, looking out at me as if asking for something.

The birds seem to really like it and, as there is now a small tree overhanging one corner, they have more shade to get out of the sun if they so desire. The next step is to build the aviary and that's all designed and the supplies list is made. Only question remaining is about the "floor". My first OOPs babies!!! Growly (mom) and Penny (dad) managed to slip these by me! Mom is a rescued homer who can't fly, dad is I believe a Tippler who was found starving and turned out to be hand tame. Penny got his name because I thought ...

Three days ago, Ozzy decided to try flying while they were playing out of their cage. He flew from my shoulder over to the cage. He seemed to land on it funny, and started favoring his left foot. I thought I would get it checked out at the vets; xrays show nothing broken or fractured, there is no swelling nor heat, no visible bruising or anything to suggest he is injured (also checked for string or hair, nothing is catching his toes). There is no discoloration, flaking of the skin, changes in ...

I finally got the aviary moved to our enclosed patio.

I think the hardest part was catching these guys to put them in cages while the move took place.

Mikko, Pij'ette and Samantha were more interested on what was going on outside than watching Sean and me move their home.

We had intended on enlarging the aviary, but Chuck just hasn't had enough time off, at one time, and I really needed to get them moved. I think they'll do just fine.

They all seem to have taken the move well and ...

EMERGENCY: 35 king pigeons dumped in SF park need homes!

Hello-

I don't have all the details yet but I do know that San Francisco Animal Control Officers picked up 35 stray king pigeons near Lake Merced in SF today. It is thought that they were used for a wedding and/or that a monk left them.

Whatever the case, the shelter was already full up with 7 other kings (who have been on the verge of being euthanized for space except that I keep buying them time) and www.MickaCoo.org is past full with more than 20 fosters available for adoption.

I'll ...

Meet Charley, a brave little survivor, rescued scalped pigeon.

Charley joined the aviary 10 days ago and has already found a mate, a very young pigeon called Taxi. The photo was taken while she was in Les' care.

She was one of Les' garden pigeons and she was attacked by a cat while nesting on the ground and lost a large portion of her scalp and her eyelid. She sought Les out for help. She has made a wonderful recovery and uses her third eyelid to protect her eye.

Amazingly the eye itself was not damaged.

WE LOVE PEANUTS !

My babies spent some time outside in the loft today where they get to know the others, and learn the way of being a pijjie. Today, they have discovered the wonder of PEANUTS! I always chop peanuts before offering them to my birds, so they are the perfect size for the little ones to taste them. When I remember how she couldn't even swallow a seed a few short weeks ago because of the canker that was blocking her throat so badly. Even had to water down the formula to get it past the blockage. ...

Jack the collared dove was not best suited for the 'doviary', as it is not really large enough for fully flighted permanent residents. We had hoped he would be company for Dovelet(te), who is disabled, but they didn't show any great interest (we think they may both be males).

So, Jack is in the main aviary now, the domain of Poppet dove, tormentor of woodpigeons and wing-slapper of even the fiercest ferals. We wondered how they'd get on, and I thought that there might be some enmity between ...
