no rest for another wicked - a last goodbye to little Tinchen

This is another sad day. Had to call the emergency vets this morning again.

A few days ago I noticed a little light grey, blue-bar pij, apparently a little lady who appeared to me not okay. She was a bit slow in her movements and while I watched her closely I noticed little tremors of her head but nothing else. I mean the tremors were hardly noticable but they were there from time to time. Her plumage looked nice, shiny and clean and I could not detect any bad poops from her. So I decided ...

Farewell, little Susie

I am very sad - little Susie did not make it. I talked to the bird clinic today and asked what happened - they told me that the infections inside had already spread too much. You remember - I found her on my balcony with that terrible crop rupture. There was already too much necrotic tissue and she could not be saved. At least they tried and I am glad about this.

Farewell, little Susie, fly high and free but I will not forget you

I have to say a special goodbye to the sweetest little white dove that I couldn't save today.

She was sitting in a cage at the 'sanctuary' when I went in this morning. She wasn't fluffed up but was just quiet and not right.

I picked her up to see why she was there and found a scab on her chest and some dried blood. I went to ask permission to bring her home to treat and was met with quite a hostile response. They said she had been there for a couple of days and seemed quite ok, so no.

Goodbye to Keith Hall, a true pigeon angel

I was very saddened to hear that Keith Hall, who ran the Hallwood Sanctuary with his wife Lyz, died on Sunday.

Keith never turned a pigeon away. Whenever we asked if he could take a bird, his immediate response was "of course!"

There will be many, many pigeons and other animals greeting him on the other side of the bridge because he has been involved in animal rescue for over 40 years.

A woodie was brought into the vets where I work today. This poor guy had horrible injuries, not all visible. Im still unsure whether he'd been hit by a car or if someone had been terrible and injured him. He wasnt a youngster, possibly a couple of year old. He'd was missing pretty much all this primary wing feathers and had no feeling in one foot. He'd been lying in someones garden for some time when he was brought in. I think he'd been partially paralysed because although he could move both ...

Farewell, Cinnabar, fly true!

An hour ago, when I went to feed my feral flock, I found my sweet little Cinnabar beside their bathing pool, just departed. Two days ago he was a picture of health and he had been medicated for canker very recently, but he fell to whatever took two of my recent rescues. :(

Cinnabar was the most beautiful of the youngsters born this Spring, with his striking red, black, brown, grey and white colouring, and he often sat on my windowsill waiting for treats. I'll miss him.

Today I found Chubby Checker lying in a nesting box with his remaining wife Wingo standing over him. He had crossed Rainbow Bridge, most probably as he was cooing under Wingo's breast.

Chubby was a disabled 1999 racing pigeon and came to us from Helen in 2003 with his first wife, Speckie, who crossed the bridge a couple of years ago. He was popular with the hens and his wives got on well together.

Just as Wingo sighed "He's gone", Wennity and Speckie welcomed him with a ...

Wennity – January 2006 – January 2009

Wennity's parents chose an unsuitable site for their nest on River Green, a hollow bowl in the fork of a tree that tended to get flooded out if there was heavy rain. Her sister, Serenity, had been washed out and brought to us some months earlier. Like Wennity she had been found at the foot of the tree, trying unsuccessfully to climb back to her nest, which was too high for her rescuers to reach.

Wennity was a beautiful, delicate, white fantail ...

On April 29, 2004, Pij & I met, thus initiating what would turn out to be a wonderful relationship. He was a beautiful fancy pigeon who, back in Dec., 2003, was found 'tumbling' about in someone's front yard.

Pij's rescuer telephoned me explaining that she has acquired a tumbler pigeon. In addition to his 'tumbling' skills she was quite taken in by his 'other trick', holding his head upside down for long periods of time while staring at the doves above him that he was housed with. As ...
