The horror continues but in the meanwhile I have no time any more to be in shock.

While Willy is improving slowly, eating again and drinking I am confronted with a new horror: Pina has PMV.

It started on Tuesday evening. She came home, astonishingly quite clumsy when she tried to land on one of her favourite places on the closet. Later on she seemed to be nervous and started to look at the ceiling a couple of times. At that point I was not very worried yet but I found it strange.

Treatment:

Antibiotics are indicated with Baytril, Amoxicillin or Sulfas being commonly recommended. One needs to consider what is or might be the primary disease.

Note: Amoxicillin is my first choice of antibiotics when "shooting from the hip". It is gentle on the pigeon and is the least expensive of the good antibiotics. Use 3 Grams per gallon for about 7 days.

I picked up a bird yesterday from the avian vet who treats my birds. A young hen was rescued in New York City with severe string feet. The vet removed all the visible string. She was not positive that there is no more in the deep cut in the worse foot. She told me to soak the feet daily to see if that would loosen anything left. The poor bird has lost 2 toes on one foot, one toe on the bad foot. She's eating ok. Is there anything else I can do for the feet? She does have some use of the bad foot ...

Here's the big question: should foods that (apparently) aggravate cold sores, caused by the herpes virus be withheld for PMV patients? Which translates as 'do all virus infections follow similar patterns?'

This discussion was initiated by my daughter, on witnessing first hand the ups and downs of the disease in Sammy, and especially the fact that he always convulsed more after eating.

'I think he shouldn't be having peas', she said. 'They aggravate viral conditions.'

One didn't make it, passed away in a matter of minutes. He was a very young adult, just skin and bone, very dehydrated, with a lump in his crop. As it was an extremely hot day, I didn't warm him, just gave him some hydrating solution, but I could tell that wouldn't be enough. As I can't do sub-q, I was about to try the emergency hydration through the vent I read about in PT once, but there was no time. :(

The toes on the broken leg are almost black, but not the lower leg itself, so there must be blood circulating still. It doesn't look to me like the fracture happened today, as there is only a little dried blood and the knee is one big ball of infection.

For all that he still puts up a fight, eats and drinks.

About three weeks ago Les telephoned me to say that one of his garden pigeons was ill and that the vet found out he had a lead pellet in his gizzard. This showed up on the X-ray and the pigeon was showing symptoms of lead poisoning.

The vet told Les that the pigeon would die slowly, and offered to euthanase. Les didn't want that so he was advised to get some sodium calciumedetate, which is the antidote to lead poisoning, and ...

Since we are truely a collection of interntional I am very interested in finding out the Pigeons illnesses the rest of you experience most with your own Pigeons or with rescues.

Here, if someone brings me a sick Pigeon it nearly always is down with the dreaded three...canker, coccidia and worms. Often the bird will have salmonella as well.

The worms or worm eggs don't show up in every fecal sample and often repeated sampling is needed to identify the worms...often there is more than one variety. ...

This little guy was waiting for me on the doorway. I was feeding ferals this afternoon and left entrance house door open. When I turned around, he was just sitting there and noticing that I watch him, he entered the house. It is very tame, did not struggle when I handle him. Eats, drinks, can fly, but it is a bit off. His poop is like in PMV birds. Color of the fluid is bright yellow and I think it is something else too.

I treated him for parasites, and started immuno-stimulants.

This is Pij'ette. She was presented to me in 2003 with a well established, untreated wing injury.

Although I was very new to this whole rescue/rehab side of life, I could clearly see her wing was injured and she had a 'bump' at the bend of her wing at the injury site. I attributed that to the wing not healing properly, but felt a thorough exam was in order by our local rehabber.

Upon exam, the rehabber began pulling out a few small feathers where the bump was. What I thought was improper ...

It is used in resistant Trichomonas insted Metronidazole and Carnidazole.

It is broad antiprotozoal drug that has also limited antiviral and antibacterial activity.

I don't have the words to express my rage and my grief.

I just found out that on Mon. 14th the entire flock of pigeons from Praça 8 de Maio appeared dead, victims of deliberate poisoning. I haven't been going to that part of town and I hadn't come across any other pigeon people recently, so I didn't know. The police are investigating, but nothing is known yet. Animal lovers point an accusing finger at local shop-keepers, who 'didn't like the mess'.

I would appreciate any info/links ...

Coccidiosis

By Dr. Colin Walker B.Sc. B.V.Sc. M.A.C.V.S (avian health)

In my last article I discussed the most common disease stopping good pigeons from performing well during racing, namely wet canker. This article discusses a second problem that can also do this, coccidiosis. Here in a nut shell is how to stop this still surprisingly common problem from affecting your birds race performance.

What is it?

Coccidia are a group of parasitic organisms that have the amazing ability to ...

This little fellow was sitting in front of my cote in desperate need of help.

Very bad case of canker almost totally obstructing trachea opening.

I cleaned throat with Lugols solution diluted in water and gave him ½ tablet Spartrix. I’m giving him some time to warm up and I’ll give him some formula with honey to boost his energy.

Recognising Signs of Illness in Your Bird by Dr. Tony Gestier BVSc. (Hons.), MACVSc. Vetafarm Australia

Early signs of illness in birds are frequently not recognised by the pet owner. As a survival tactic in the wild, a sick bird will attempt to maintain a normal appearance for as long as possible, so that by the time any signs of illness are apparent, the bird may have been ill for some time. The bird that dies "suddenly" may be the result of the owners failure to make distinctions ...

An indication of a splayed leg is when the babies leg begins to point outward from the body. This can occur with both legs or just one and can be corrected if detected early enough.

To help prevent this from happening, make sure there is something under the baby, e.g., a small wash cloth, a piece of an old T-shirt, etc., for them to grasp on to, thereby allowing the legs to stay underneath ...

Hi all. Am between a rock and a hard place. I have a patient, survivor of attempted hawk attack, resulting in a small gash beneath left eye. I treated him, washed the wound, applied silvadene to it, and medicated him w/ cipro and medacam. I then noticed he was exhibiting symptoms oft associated w/ PMV...star-gazing, floppy head, bad coordination, ability to walk only backwards....flapping wings wildly until he eventually falls over himself and just stops moving (usually with head under body ...

A bad experience with fungus.

I've recently had a long ordeal during which I nursed & lost two beloved pigeons, despite my best efforts and more money that I can afford to spend on vet care, and I wanted to share the experience with others who may be interested and benefit.

As a brief background, in August of 2007 I brought 3 young birds home from a fellow fancier, who were kept in quarantine 3 weeks and then moved into the main loft. About 2 weeks after they moved in one bird became ...

Kim called me Monday evening about one of her 'resident' ferals that was limping. Upon capture she noticed it had string wrapped around it's foot.

Generally four hands are better than two, so she brought the little one over.

While she was on her way, I called Charis to run through the drill of removing it.

She went through your list, Cynthia, and it was a tremendous help.

When I started to remove it, we discovered it was human hair that was entangled around the foot. After about 90 ...

Hi Cynthia,

Many thanks for posting about Maggie's encounter with maggots.

Although not the most pleasant subject, it's important that we all take note of it.

The more we learn, the better we are prepared to assist our feathered friends.

The following link will take you directly to Cynthia's post.

 To both of you.
