First~ I gotta say .. he is beautiful... Having said that!

He would be MUCH much MUCH more beautiful about 300 miles away!

This is who decided to camp out on our fence this morning.... GRRR he is SO maddening! He has killed so many songbirds now in OUR yard... that I just want him to go away!. ..

Soooo..... I marched outside this morning with my hands up on my hips and had a very polite conversation with this handsome one... It went a little something like this:

Before you get a fright, my pigeons are safe, as are the feral cats and the seagulls (I think he was aiming at a seagull but missed). As for the human predator, my (usually absentee) next door neighbour, he is not getting away with it...

Today was a hot summer day. I was outside setting up the baths for the birds in my aviary. Several came out to take a dip. 2 males, Hans and Petey, played hooky from nest duty for a while to bathe. After a few minutes, the birds were laying spread out in the sun to dry off. Then Hans, looking up, stiffened and gave that grunting alarm cry they do when seeing something threatening. The other birds looked up alarmed. I tried to see what they saw but could not. I moved away a bit to get out from ...

Does anyone have any suggestions to keep mosquitoes away from the birds in a loft? I don't like the idea of my birds getting eaten up with summer coming. I thought to hang mosquito netting at the door. I've also seen these things that have a pesticide in them that you hang up for sale in pigeon supply places. Are they effective? Safe? Any other ideas?

Charis posted this video in the Pigeon Safety forum.

I'd like to post it here, in the predator discussion forum, as well.

The speed alone, that these birds are capable of is incredible.

Realizing each species had it's own means of survival, I hope my pigeon prayer holds true.

Mites

Listing of Mites & Affected Bird Species ... Wild Birds & Mites

Mites can be found on any pet bird or avian species. Mites spread from bird to bird as flock members make body contact. Contrary to what many people still believe, those metal round Protective Mite Killers you hang on the side of a bird's cage are toxic. They do in fact contain an insecticide; however, it is very doubtful they would kill any mites. They just might kill your bird. Not recommended! ...

Several years ago, early in the morning,I woke to the sound of someone pounding on my my front door. I answered the door to a frantic man with a dead bird in his hand. Hethat explained he was the pet sitter for my friend Rebecca and that she had given him my address in the event of an emergency. The bird in his hand was Scruff, a hand raised Sparrow that I had raised and given to rebecca and her husbsand Chris.

He explained that he had gotten to their house, that morning, to find dying ...

Contrary to popular belief the maggots that you might find on a pigeon, dove or any other wild animal are neither harmless nor beneficial, nor do they feed only on necrotic flesh. They are deadly.

A couple of years ago I was told that there was a fledgeling dove on the ground near my office and that flies had been crawling over her. I picked her up, took her home and did a quick check for injuries and fly eggs. I didn’t find any.

The next morning I checked her again before ...
