As some of you would know, I stay in an apartment and feed a flock of ferals at my window ledge. All the rescues me and Dev have done so far (around 5 of them) have involved finding pigeons in a very critical state with the exception of Mito.

I have noticed that in all these cases the birds seem to be suffering from some kind of severe respiratory infection or viral infection. I came to this conclusion because all of them had their beaks clogged, discharge from their eyes, eyes infected, ...

My newest little rescue found last Saturday is a baby feral no more than 4/5 weeks old.

When I found him or rather when my dog Pookie found him, he was grounded, unable to fly, very, very thin and weak, half his tail feathers gone and had an awful looking eye injury. I began syringe feeding him Kaytee, cleaned the eye, applied neosporin, and put him on amoxicillin as per Charis's instruction. AS the weekend passed the eye injury became worse and looked absolutely awful. Yesterday I arranged ...

Golubiatko means "Little Pretty Pigie" in Russian.

I found Goubiatko on Portland State University grounds, very sick, on March 30, 2009.

From April 9, 2009 to April 11, 2009 I treated her with Baytril thinking that she had Salmonellosis which turned out to be not the case. The really visible and sudden improvement in her condition came when Matilda instructed me to de-worm her, too, with Ivermectin. I administered Ivermectin (de-wormer) on April 10, 2009. One day after Ivermectin, ...

Helen is gobsmacked! I went out for a walk with hubby and dog and came back with hubby, dog and intelligent pigeon! This pidge was so weak it fell off its ledge under a bridge and into the canal just as we were walking through. It landed right on the other side whereI couldn't reach but when it heard my voice it belly flopped with its wings across the canal to my feet and let me bend down and pull it out ...

Hey everyone. I have been researching SR. I've read Matilda's link in resources also, but I'm still in a dilemma. I may be adopting 2 young ferals that are releasable, but they are coming from a warmer climate than it is here. May be 20 to 25 degree difference. I think they have been housed indoors since their rescue to. I know imprinting is a concern, but could their release wait until spring? Thanks ahead for any help. Naunnie

I thought I'd start a thread for sightings of released rehabs or other feathered friends we only see from time to time.

That's because when I went to change the pigeons' water at the park I came across Ritchie the Terror, who was released over a year ago after recovering from a broken leg. Considering the poor life expectancy for feral pigeons and the fears about how they will cope after release, I was overjoyed.

This was him recovering:

Today during my husband's lunch hour he rang me to say he found a pigeon in the road that appeared ill. She was regurgitating corn as well as having convulsions. I came and picked up the bird and brought her to the wildlife rehabilitation center (where I work). Our wonderful vets dropped everything because they immediately recognized (from her seizures) that she had been poisoned. She was in bad shape, but they were working hard to try to get the poison out of her system and make her comfortable. ...

Hi Guys,

I have a question I already wanted to ask a while ago: is it normal that a pigeon lays 20 eggs within one year?

I am a bit worried about our Emma, having read that laying eggs is total stress for the body and depriving of important minerals, especially calcium. I regularly replace her eggs by plaster eggs - which are originally her own but filled with plaster

She is getting good food which is a specific mixture for pigeons (includes corn, 2 different peas, black shelled ...

This is Stan, he has been around for some time, but lately he decided to adopt me. At first, he would show up whenever I go out in the garden to check if I don’t have by any chance something to eat.

Most of the time I would stick to the schedule, morning and evening feed, but his persistence would change my mind and sometime I would drop him some seeds to keep him happy, who knows, maybe there are some hungry chicks to feed.

Couple of days age, he started following me like puppy around. ...

The latest rescue, which I've named Sweet Pea, arrived at 9 pm on Wednesday evening. The little thing had been found in a large forested park a couple of hours earlier and had walked up to the rescuerer and huddled down next to her foot. As luck would have it, another woman was walking by that had found me through PT last September. She noticed something was wrong and offered my number.

Even though it was still 85 degrees when Sweet Pea arrived, the bird was freezing cold, listless ...

Hello everyone!

I am currently in a debate over pigeon diseases and health hazards, with the welfare of some pigeons in Cyprus at stake.

Unfortuateley the person I am debating has swallowed a dictionary and has spewed out a load probably produced by a pest control paid scientist.

Any links/info on feral's would be very much appreciated as I seem to be on my way to a lengthy essay. I've forgotten how much I enjoy "persuasive" writing!!!

Take care!

One of the ferals in my 'backyard' flock was showing definite signs of canker, so I tried out an idea that seems to be working:

I mix up a day's worth of metronidazole and dip a small amount of soft bread in it until it soaks it all up, and in a bowl I have soggy bread (with only water).

I throw the patient a tiny bit of soggy bread, and as the others start to arrive, lure them away by throwing lots of soggy bread. Then before the patient moves away to join the others, I throw her the ...

I recently noticed a feral who has been visiting my yard had odd looking feet. She walked with a slight limp and the toes seemed stuck together. I though it might be a string injury so I trapped her. I was surprised to find that the outer toe was attached to the center toe by a web of skin! I've heard it can happen but this is the first time I've seen it. The bird was fine otherwise. I released her. She wasn't put out by being trapped, she still comes by for handouts. Here's some pictures of ...

A while ago I posted this thread with a video of my homemade trap: Web footed feral pigeon

I have since found a pair of pigeons nesting on my neighbors house. Unfortunately, they are not welcome there. I wish they'd nest on my house but I really don't have anything that would appeal for nest building. Anyway, I have managed to trap them a few times over the past several weeks and released them a distance away twice. They keep coming back. I used the home made trap in the above thread.

Not exactly sure what the problem is, but he may have had a Chlamydia infection. Maria had been treating him with various homeopathic remedies, and his eyes are no longer watery, but the area behind his right eye is very swollen, possibly related Conjunctivitis.

I have always noticed that my feral Pigeons have a prolonged molt. The keepers of Homing Pigeons and such maintain that their birds molt once a year. We are both correct.

Two days ago, I released the bird on the right. He had come to me 10 days earlier from another rehabber and I finished his treatment. By the day I let him go he was frantic to get out and when he did, he flew north. I knew he had been picked up 1 1/2 miles north of me. Great, I thought...he's going home.

This morning he returned with a beautiful little red hen...he had brought her to the new resturant for lunch.

Frank is a long time member of our family. The short version of a very long story is that Chuck picked up Frank and Jesse in Denver back in Dec of 2002.

They were found near a barn on a gal's property with nearly identical wing injuries.

They were residents of our aviary up until a year ago when Frank became a tyrant towards the others sharing the aviary. I did everything I could think of to correct the problem, to no avail.

Chuck and I decided perhaps that was his way of telling us ...

I love watching my backyard flock fly overhead. They are so graceful.

I've been fortunate to capture some of them on camera.

I'm in the process of organizing ALL my pictures and came across these and thought I would share them.

The first photo is nothing out of the ordinary but the second and third photos are quite different.

Just depends on the lighting at the time they are taken.

Peter built this freeder for the feral Pigeons and they love it. It took them a couple of hours to catch on, but once they did and figured out that most furred things can't get into it, they seem to be very happy.

Peter is very clever and he has a quick mind. He quickly visuaized what was needed and had it ready the next morning. I was sure surprised.

I apprecaite the feeder so much and I wanted to tell him so and share it with all of you.

In my metal chariot in a long line of metal chariots, all of us waiting for the red light to turn green, I noticed the pigeon on the side of the road. I wondered how I came to focus on him. He was gray, the pavement and wall behind him were gray, and the sky, gray. Yet, I noticed.
