An injured adult feral showed up looking for help. Here are some pictures:

pigeon with injured wing Badwing1
pigeon with injured wing Badwing2
pigeon with injured wing Badwing3

She is somewhat non-responsive, in that she lets me pick her up and touch her, including some poking and prodding for injuries. She let me open her mouth and look inside without resistance -- everything looks normal there. I put her beak into some water and she drank a bit. Then she was more resistant to me opening her beak. I put a piece of corn in her beak and she ate it. I put in a second piece and she just held it there, so I took it out.

The leg by the injured wing seems somewhat shriveled in appearance. I touched it without causing her to react. I wrapped the toes around my finger and she gripped a little bit.

Any suggestions on what to do next are welcome.

The wing looks seriously injured. Could possibly be a cat attack...........You need to put the bird on antibotics ASAP.

Does the wing appear to be broken?

You need to cleanse the wound and keep the bird warm and comfortable, until others will be online to give you more advice.

Thanks for taking in this precious bird Pigeon angel

Jim is checking the bird over to look for other wounds. If the bird survived a hawk strike, there may be a puncture wound near the crop area.

I spent some time trying to clean the wound. I got off a lot of dried blood. At first, she was non-responsive. When she saw me dribbling water on the wound to clean it, she tried to drink the water. I ofered her a shallow bowl of water and she took a big drink. I kept cleaning the wound. She pooped and got suddenly alert. She was getting ready to try to fly away, so I covered her with a T-shirt for a couple of minutes. She remained alert and focused on escape. I smeared a bunch of antibiotic ointment on the wing injury and the foot, and put her back in her box. Here are the photos I was able to get of the wing:

Try as best you can to rub off the excess ointment.

It looks to me like the bird has a wound on the hip...is that right?

Did you figure out what antibiotics you have?

I looked the bird over a bit before starting on cleaning the wing, but I didn't see any other signs of injury. Since I didn't get a chance to look in detail, after my last post, I went back to see if I could examine her further. She is very alert and hobbles away as soon as I try to reach for her. I don't want to worsen her injuries by making her struggle.

Should I leave her alone or try to do more tonight?

If you use Neosporin, the cream is much better than the ointment.

Apparently the god who looks out for pigeons has a somewhat twisted sense of humor and didn't think that the pigeon with the injured wing was enough.

One of the buildings where I work was "pigeon-proofed" on Wednesday. This involved (among other things) sealing up some openings where pigeons were getting in, as well as running off the pigeons that were already inside. I was worried that there might be babys in there. After taking care of Injured-Wing, I was about to head home when I noticed that the janitors had unlocked that building tonight. I snuck in and went up to where the pigeons had been living. Sure enough, I found two babies that had apparently been starving for 24 hours or so.

I fed them and put them on a heating pad:

Unfortunately, my one good heating pad (the kind that doesn't automatically turn off) was being used by the poor pigeon with the injurred wing, so he ended up getting stuck with room mates for the night:

I opened up a way for the parents to get back into the building and I am planning to put the babies back there at dawn to see if Mom and Dad start feeding them again. Does anyone know if that's a waste of time, or risky for the babies (it's fairly cold where I found them.)

Your Pigeon angel wing span is a big as an Eagle's, Jim. pigeon with injured wing 35455 Wink

With regard to the babies, they look old enough to be starting to eat on their own.
For their safety, I would hesitate to put them back. JMO

I love the little 'apartment' you made for the trio. pigeon with injured wing 142829

Bless you for all you do for these guys. YOU rock

Sending positive thoughts all goes well. Feeling great

Oh Jim... Shock ...I hardly know what to say.

As for putting ther babies back, it all depends upon how long mom and dad have been locked out. If it's more than a day, I'd say forget it as they are probably on another hest somewhere anyway, if you didn't see another nest around. I wouldn't open the building up for them as next time their fate might not be so good. It's very sad.

A friend offered me some left over amoxicillin from when her cat was sick. It has been refrigerated the whole time. Here's what the bottle says:

equivalant to 1.5g amoxicillin when reconstitued. concentration of 50 mg/ml
amoxicillin as the trihydrate.

on the back: 50mg/ml(30ml)

Could I dilute or otherwise use this for the pigeon with the injured wing?

Jim.............It appears that the pigeon God has appointed you as his special Pigeon angel

Bless you for caring and taking in the babies as well.

What is the date of the liquid amoxicillin??? It would have to be quite recent for it to be any good. Liquid amoxicillin has a very short shelf life in the refrigerator (approx. 2 weeks) and looses it antiobotic qualities very rapidly. If you could find some tablets I'm sure someone will be able to advise you of the correct dosage.

Way To Go for the amazing job you are doing.

That's right Jim...the amoxicillin that has been refridgerated is only good for 10-14 days.

It looks more that this pigeon was hit by car, stone or something hard. I would use Arnica pills to speed wound healing and overcome shock (besides oinments and cremes). Honey in the drinking water would help giving him energy and restoring blood loss.

The very fascinating part of this story, is that Jim told me he finds his rescues in the same location. They know where to go to get his help.

The Pigeon with the injured wing and the two baies will be going to Fallen Feathers later in the week. Jim intended to take them there yesterday but one of the other young birds was ill and he took her to the vet instead.

He was telling me that while he was feeding the babies, the injured Pigeon jumped out of her box and tired to feed one of them. Almost makes me wonder if she is the mom to the babies.

The pigeon with the injured wng is doing a lot better. After 7 days of flagil and 3 days of doyxcycline he's eating and drinking a lot and starting to act like a normal pigeon. He took a bath yesterday, and has taken a fancy to the young pigeon I found under the underpass (https://pij-n-angels.forumotion.net/pigeon-and-dove-illness-and-injury-discussion-forum-f21/strangely-injured-feral-t1493.htm) He follows her around doing normal male courting behavior, and, although she is somewhat receptive, when he tries to make his move, she gets scared and flies away. Poor Injured-Wing pigeon has tried to pursue her a couple of times, only to do a face-plant into the floor. He can hop onto things, and flaps both wings when he does, but flying seems not to be on the menu yet. He also spends quite a bit of time trying to get to the two babies to feed them. He's being a bit obsesive about it, frankly. Interestingly Underpass-Pigeon has also tried to feed them a couple of times.

In any event, now that Injured-Wing pigeon is starting to walk around and do stuff, I noticed that, although he is walking on the foot on his injured side, he's clearly having problems:

pigeon with injured wing Foot1
pigeon with injured wing Foot2

As he's been preening, I've also noticed a wierd bare spot on his back:

pigeon with injured wing Back1
pigeon with injured wing Back2
pigeon with injured wing Back3

Any comments or suggestions would be welcome.

If so, that would be great.

Although I can't tell from the pictures, Jim, I suspect the bird may have an abcess which does ned to be looked at. The thing with bird pus, is that it is thick, more the consistancy of cottage cheese and needs to be removed. My thought is that if he does have an abcess, it could be pressing on the nerves and affecting the foot.
Do you see any cream or yellow color under the skin in that spot?

These two toes on the left leg look broken, I would cast them if it is not too late. Bald spot looks quite healthy colored and I hope it is just missing feathers, but Charis might be right and it could be something underneath. If it is abscess there will be inflammation and swollen tissue on touch.

I'm wondering if there is a b-b pellet pressing on a nerve.
