Matilda....he is at this point only eating safflower seed, parrot pellets, and bread dusted with probiotics.

Plamenh....3-1/2 weeks at this point. The Clavamox just started yesterday.

Well....2-1/2 days on Clavamox and things seem to be improving. His poops are more formed and look closer to 'normal' pigeon poops.

Can't tell if he is gaining weight yet....seems to be but maybe it's just my wishful thinking. Will keep y'all posted.

Should I keep up w/ the probiotics while he is on Clavamox...or hold off until after the med course is complete ????

You should hold off on the probiotics until the antibiotics are over.

Yeah, antibiotics will kill probiotics. You can give him vitamins without calcium though.

....mmmmmm..I don't think the Clavamox is the answer. Not much change, really.

Here's what seems to be happening, though:

He is drinking a lotta water. He seems more thirsty than an average pigeon. And when he does so, the poops are runny with a lotta clear in 'em and the green is wormy-lookin'. When I hold back on the water (temporarily), the poops are better formed and appear much more like 'normal'.

So....tell me, folks:

What sort of condition is it which causes water not to be properly absorbed by the digestive process ? Is this renal...intestinal...liver...etc ????

Any educated guesses ???

Please do not depreive him from water. Yost add electrolytes and vitamins. You can also use rice water. Just cook rice for 20~30 min and give water once cooled to him.

I know the semantics weren't great in that previous post..... so was wondering if someone would misinterpret it.

I am certainly not depriving him of water.....I just wanted to see if a short stretch with no water would effect the droppings....and compare that to droppings after he was given ample water......

Blood test today...I will report back.....

Well....tests back...complete renal and liver panel....and....

...nothing really abnormal.

I dunno fi that's good news or bad.

Vet said that since the Clavamox isn't having an effect, she wanted to try Vibramycin injections. So he had his first today, and will have a second next week. After that, I am just gonna go with Doxycycline orals for an add'l week.

If a bird has the virus of PMV...can it lie dormant ..until exposed to stress?

If yes....would such a bird have PMV poops without exibiting the actual symptoms of PMV? I have NO idea

My understanding is...yes, it certainly can. However...and folks can correct me if I am wrong....I believe that a bird with dormant PMV wouldn't be exhibiting weight loss while eating like a little pig.

he's definitely not showing any signs of PMV. Seriously, he looks and acts like a pretty normal pigeon....maybe a bit more inactive than others I have had here....but, nothing really unusual besides the weight/poops.

I am gonna bring in another fecal sample just to see if perhaps it turns out differently than the first.

In one aspect I am sorta relieved...renal problems in birds usually end terribly badly.....so given that there was no indication of that...I guess that may be good.

I'm not saying the birds has worms but I will say that worms don't always show up in fecal samples.

AZ...does your friend show any signs of either PMV-esque symptoms or lack of any weight gain ? is he/she underweight ?

At first NO she showed only the poops like your little one was doing. almost identical!
She has lost weight. For the last 3 days I am syringe feeding...

She now has full blown PMV...((or so I will find out tomorrow, she is going for the blood test)) SHe has most all of the symptoms now. Disappointed
