Robin.....I want to make sure I have every bit of info to give to Dr. Hauck.

Have you started Precious on the Clavamox??? and if so.....What dosage?...and how are you giving it?

Louise

Yes, her 1st. dose was last night... Hmmm I want to say less than a gram, just a tiny bit. I know not very scientific  Wink
I was afraid of overdosing her. I put it into her liguid exact.

I just checked her naval and the yellow yolk stuff seems to be less visiable, so either the bit of Clavamox is working or her body is absorbing the 'yolk'? Around the scab is less swollen looking too.

I totally understand why your vet doesn't want to give his opinion. I doubt if it will change his mind even when he sees the photos, plus the cost of the office visit. Serious EEK!!

Thanks Robin.

Louise...ask Dr. Hauck if he has seen anything similar before and if so if it's a normal in his experience. If it looks unusual to him, what was his experience. Let him know that we understand he can't give a definitive answer without personally examining the baby.

I know Dr. Hauck will not give a definitive diagnosis, but my experience with him is that he is very easy to talk to and more than willing to help any needy bird. I am sure I will be able to extract enough information from him to help little Precious and ease Robin's mind a bit.

Glad to hear that Robin's observation thismorning is that the yellow stuff is less visable. Hopefully it is just yolk that is finally being absorbed by the body and if there was an infection it has been excreated by the pus plug.

I am going to go there at 1:00PM, that is when they return from lunch. Hopefully I can get in before my actual apointment time.

I'll get back to all later.

Robin...............There has never been a charge for Dr. Hauck's services. He is an absolute God Sent Pigeon angel for all here in Vegas. All the wild birds that he sees is through his "Wild Wings Project"....I think he uses it as a tax write-off. In any case, he is a wonderful man, and has helped save many of my birds. I don't know what I would do here without him.

Louise

Robin....I do have your phone # with me, just in case I need to reach you.

Louise is waiting for Dr Hauck to return from lunch now. She will call me to post what he tells her, as soon as she leaves the clinic. It shouldn't be very long now.

OK...I just had a call form Louise. Dr. Hauck said the baby looks fine and that is the yoke sack. The baby should absorb it completley in 7-10 days. He did have concern about the scab and suggests you swab it once a day with benedine. Because of the scab he thought the antibiotics are a good idea. His recommendation is baytril or cipro. Louise has dosing amounts for each as well as the clavamox and will pst them when she gets home.
She has cipro and I have cipro and baytril. Either of us can send you some in the morning.

I have spoken to both Charis and Robin. Here is a brief recap of Dr. Hauck's observations and recommedations.

The yellow areas are the normal yolk sacs. They normally take 7 to 10 days to be absorbed into the body....Absolutely nothing to be concerned about. Happy Dance Dr. Hauck was a little concerned with the size of the umbilical scab....he felt it was much larger than normal. He recommends that the scab be swabed with benetine or alcohol once daily to aid in the drying process. His concern was that if it fell off prematurely it could result in an open wound that would be highly susceptible to infection. As a precautionary measure he recommended a course antibotics for Precious. His personal preferance is either Baytril or Cipro, as it requires less of the drug and the duration is longer lasting in the birds system. Clavamox, amoxicillin can be used, but he feels that the Cipro would be the best.

The dosage for a baby of 13 grams is as follows:

.02 cc for Cipro or Baytril - 2 times a day

.02 cc for Clavamox, amoxicillin, or any other penicillin type drug - 4 times a day.

I had Cipro at home and it has already been sent to Robin overnight mail and she should receive it by 3:00PM tomorrow.

So............with a little bit of time and Robin's loving care Pigeon angel , Precious should grow up to be a beautiful Egyptian Swift Baby. Happy Dance Hip Hip Hooray Thrilled Celebrate

My experience with Dr. Hauck is always a pleasure. Circle of Love I walk in with no bird, just pictures and my sincere concern. He is always wlling to offer his advice and help. As usual there was no charge for the visit. Dr. Hauck and his staff are not just a wonderful resource for Las Vegas, but as this instance proves for the entire Pig-n-Angel community.

I would really appreciate if any of you could find the time, to please send a little Thank You Note to his office.......I know they love cards and letters.
