Seeing the really wonderful reaction  I had with Sweetie this morning. I have decided that my entire indoor gang Dove right Dove right Dove right Dove right Dove right Dove right need to get outside.

So tomorrow morning everyone is going on an outdoor field trip to the patio. They all need to get some fresh air, sunlight, and observe the ferals.

Dove right Dove right Jackie & Snowflake (plus nesting basket & 2eggs)

Dove right Baby Una - little hen with one eye

Dove right Baby (bad boy) Gladys.....has no idea he is a pigeon - totally human imprinted

Dove right Sweetie

Dove right Yet to be named little feathered foot with broken wing.

I can't wait to see all their reactions.

Wish I could send you some........We have more than enough here in the desert.

Strange, but I almost look forward to a rainy, cloudy day once in awhile.

PostSubject: PIJJIES OUT ON THE PATIO - 6:00AM   TAKING INDOOR BIRDS OUTSIDE Icon_minitimeMon Jun 21, 2010 8:33 am

Everyone went outside thismorning. All seemed to have a great time. Happy Dance

Dove right Jackie sat on her eggs like a dutiful little hen that she is and just enjoyed the sights. I love it/them

Dove right Snowflake, being his agressive, territorial self went into a major rant. Major Rant RooCooing, bobbing like no tomorrow.

Dove right Baby Gladys was totally confused and kept looking for me to reassure him. TAKING INDOOR BIRDS OUTSIDE 279675

Dove right Baby Una was very inquisitive and watched the ferals very intently. Circle of Love

Dove right Sweetie was real excited and was banging into the cage door. I think she really wants to rejoin her flock now. TAKING INDOOR BIRDS OUTSIDE 193770

Dove right Little Feathered Feet became excited at the sight of the birds and poor baby was trying to flap her wings, even the one that is taped. Very sad

I'm exhausted...........I used the opportunity to give the bird room a major deep cleaning since everyone was safe outside. They are still outside, but I will bring them in before 9:00AM when the sun really hits the backyard and it gets too hot.

Pictures to follow..........I sent them to Charis to post.

Interesting video about the importance of sunlight for birds. This bvideo is geared toward parrots but applies to pigeons/doves as well.

:) You're brave, I want to bring my stinker outside but I don't have the heart to do it in her cage...and I'm afraid she'll get hurt if I just take her out freely. She's bonded to me as a mate so I suspect that if I take her out she'll cling to me like glue but there's still that fear there.

I've thought about getting a harness but to me that's not much different than bringing her out in a cage, it's just a tease. x.x

Does anyone here have experience with this kind of thing? If I do, what kind of behavior should I expect to see from her?

Actually...there is such a thing as a diaper with a harness. They work great and you can buy them here...

Really though...you bird is much safer in a cage. Hawks have been know to grab them right off ones shoulder. I would hate for that to happen to you. One member watched in horror as a hawk flew with off with pigeon and leash. Having a bad day

Welcome, by the way.

0_0 Watching that happen would rip my heart right ouf of my chest.

I did watch that video about UV light, more than ever I want to bring Seni (my stinker) outside and thanks to your post I am heavily considering doing so in her cage. Maybe if I can find a cheap cage I'll get it as a carrier....that way it's a bit more mobile than what she's in now. :)

Thanks for the welcome! It's nice to know there's other pigeon lovers out there. ^_^

The perfect size to take them outside is one that is 30" long x 18" wide x 18" tall . Often that size is sold as a flight cage for finch but it's a great cage for pigeons too. You should be able to get one for under $35.

Charis- Awesomeness, thanks! When I get paid on Friday I'll probably go up to the pet store and see if I can find a good cage for her. :)

Cindy- Thanks for the warm welcome! Yep, that's my Fat Stinky Squishy Seni Peni, lol. She was a rescue effort, a former friend of mine found her in the middle of the night digging around a gas station dumpster. She was just a baby, I estimate her to have been aorund 2-3 months old. When I brought her home she was so weak and emaciated she couldn't even fly. :(
