| This summer I have unusual number of sick and grounded squeakers. I was wondering what is the reason for it until today. Second day in the row, I’m finding bloody squeakers on the grass. Yesterday baby died in my hands while trying to wash wounds and find what caused injuries. I was too late. Today another squeaker smeared in blood were sitting under the palm. I was simply amazed by the simplicity of the answer and long time for me to produce the truth. The reason is palm tree. My neighbors trimmed palm tree in their yard in the beginning of the summer. Pigeons nesting there were forced to move as their nest was destroyed and no hiding place left. They moved to my palm tree and suddenly population doubled and squeakers become victims of territorial fights. Tree in question with remaining birds My overcrowded palm tree | |

| That's so sad, Plamen. Would there be a way to attach nest boxes to the Palm tree? | |

| There may be a way if designed in semi-circular way and attached to form a ring around the trunk. I need to think of material and way to form them. Palm trees have no branches and this will create problem with fixing them, but nothing is impossible. Any ideas and suggestions are welcome. | |

| I suppose you would need to attach the boxes to the semi circle that you build. It could actually go all the way around the Palm and be secured to the gound the way deck are here.As yu are, NiteOwl is also quite clever designing these kinds of unusual things. I'll email the thread to her. It looks like you have a lot of feral pigeons. How many pairs do you think nest there? | |

| It's a sight that I'm not accustomed to seeing but then we don't have palm trees. | |

| Sorry to hear about the babies, Plamenh. We had 4 palm trees in our backyard and so many pigeons nesting in them. Thankfully we had very few babies fall. Wishing you all the luck in the world attaching nest boxes to the tree. I would never have thought of doing that. We would have needed a professional tree climber get up to where they were nesting. | |

| I would say 30~40 pairs that were my original inhabitants, now with all immigrants, maybe double.
The height of the palm trunk is over 8 meters. I have 6 meters long ladder with a bit balancing I can barely reach lowest leaves. Trunk is soft and can’t hold nails. Circumference of the trunk is around 1.5~1.8 meters.

| Perhaps you could build something else in the yard for them to nest in? Something that would be easy to replace the eggs with wooden ones. | |

| Wow, I've never seen so many pigeons on a palm tree! I'm so sorry to hear about he babies. Any loss is bad, but it's especially heartbreaking when they're little squeakers.
The height of the tree is a problem. And the softness of the wood. However, considering that the trunk is textured, how about fitting a circle of strong wire around the tree, at a height you can safely reach, and then hanging the nesting boxes from it?

| Plamenh - would lag-bolting about 4-6" into the trunk of the tree hurt the tree at all ? Looks like a pretty hefty tree there | |

I had the same thought... not only for easy population control, but also because of the possible danger to the tree and/or you. Or... as your topic title suggests, have you seriously considered planting another palm or two? Some, like the "Queen" and "Canary Island Date" palms are fast growing and are hardy to below freezing temps... Best wishes,

| There are a plenty kinds of palm trees in SA, Pigeons for some reason like this kind. Maybe the leaves structure and spacing suits their needs. These are not fast growing though. I’ll look around and see what can it be possible solution. | |

| I had a feeling they might have a preference for a certain kind. From your photo it looks like the spaces left by the cut leaves mimic their native cliff-like nesting places and the height of the tree is probably right. (I've noticed in Hawaii, that they don't nest or roost over a certain height). I don't know what kind your palm is but most that I know of don't have very large root balls if you were interested in planting another of the same...
Anyhow ! I do hope you're able to come up with the perfect solution so that you and your ferals are kept safe and happy :)
Best wishes, | |

| Even if you were able to attach boxes to the tree, they would probably prefer the higher branches anyway. Building something else in the yard would probably be better. You could always plant more of these trees, even if they are not fast growing, that wouldn't help right now, but later on maybe. I wouldn't want to run lag bolts through a tree of mine. Too bad. | |
