| I had to go to the ER Tues evening and was diangosed with double pneumonia. My concern is that when I get back home that going into the loft will be a problem. Is there any way that I can still go in the loft and not have difficulty breathing? My parents are extremely concerned for my health but they love the pigeons and are very supportive of my interests. | |

| I'm so sorry to hear how ill you've been! If at all possible, try not to go into the loft straight away when you get home, as the feather bloom will certainly irritate your convalescing lungs. Do you have any fellow pigeon lovers near your area that could help with feeding, watering and cleaning? Or would your family be prepared to help you out for a little while with that? You will need a special mask for a while, the same type as is used by people who have Bird Fancier's Lung (Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis). I'll try to find you a liknk for it in a moment. By the way, were you tested for Fancier's Lung? You need to establish if you have it, whether that was the trigger for your double pneumonia. Most people who were diagnosed with it at a late stage had to part with their birds or take very special precautions. (Ask Cindy, she knows first-hand! ) Off to find you that link. Get well soon! | |

| Yes, my brothers are taking care of them for me while I am in the hospital and will do it as long as needed. I didn't mention my pigeons to the doctors but my parents did. We are still waiting for some test results from the (camera through my nose and into my lungs) can't remember what it was called. I am really hoping that I can just do the precautions. Trying not to think of anything worse. The only other time I have been really sick was in Feb/Mar when I had scarlett fever. I don't know. | |

| Hi Pigeon Kid, I am so very sorry to hear you are ill and in the hospital. In 2006 I became very ill after having a cold. Had a lingering cough, very fatigued and short of breathe. My illness went misdiagnosed for three years. I was always being treated for asthma. I was finally sent to a pulmonary specialist. After many tests (pulmonary function, Ct scans, MRI, numerous chest x-rays) it was suspected I had been suffering from Chronic Hypensentivity Pneumonitis and not asthma. A blood test confirmed the suspicion. Unfortunately, I sustained lung damage because the illness was not detected in a timely manner. PLEASE ask the dr. to do a blood test to check for this illness. Three cheers to your brothers for helping out with caring for you beautiful birds. Please keep us posted on how you are doing. Sending a special get well wish your way!! | |

| Thank you all for your support. Sorry I've not posted in awhile. I got out of the hospital on the 13th and just returned for a follow-up yesterday. Turns out that it is pneumonitis. My lungs were very bad off, and were functioning at lower than 50% efficiency. I've had to stay inside and away from all the animals for a week, but yesterday the doctors said I can go outside again. So I must've improved a little bit. :) But, I still have to stay away from my pigeons and chickens. :( | |

| Hi Pigeonkid,
Thanks for the update! I'm very glad you are out of hospital now and feeling much better, but what a terrible shame that the diagnosis was pneumonitis! Why can't pigeon people trade that with pigeon haters for, say, a sprained ankle... Will you have to give your beloved pigeons and chickens away? | |

| We really appreciate your update, PigeonKid. I am so very sorry to hear what the diagnosis is. I never realized how much I took taking a deep breath for granted, until I couldn't. That was a very scary feeling. I'm glad you are feeling better and out of the hospital. I hope you continue to recovery without any problems. | |

| I went to the doctor's on Tuesday for my follow up and was very disappointed when they told me the lab test results. The results came back showing two different molds and pigeon serum. The one doctor believes I need to get rid of the pigeons (maybe all the feathered friends) while the other doctor seems to think that we can find a safe way to be around them. My Dad got me a respirator that would keep everything out. I just don't understand why the one doctor doesn't think that would be sufficient. Of course she has thought it was the pigeons since I was in ICU. HHHmmmmm She says that this is not uncommon, especially in children! I guess I need to do some research and try and support my cause. My parents are very supportive of my interests but are concerned for my health. But they think that the respirator should be sufficient. And what about the mold???? | |

| Yes, what about the molds? Strange they didn't comment on that... I too hope the respirator works out well for you. Of course your pigeons would think you are an alien from another galaxy, but at least you'd be able to keep them. Your parents sound wonderful, so supportive! All the best! Get well soon! | |

| Hi there, PigeonKid,
How have you been? I was wondering whether there is any update on your situation, how the respirator worked for you, and if you're much better now.
Al the best,
Teresa | |

| Hi, I am doing good. I have the respirator and it works well. I am also taking “Bio Vent drops” and that is helping a lot. I have started to go in the loft again! But my doctor still says not to go near the pigeons, chickens, ducks etc… Even though the test said I have 94% lung function. They said 80% and above is the usual… I am fully convinced that the doctor has something against pigeons… Maybe one pooped on her once? LOL | |
