Several years ago, early in the morning,I woke to the sound of someone pounding on my my front door. I answered the door to a frantic man with a dead bird in his hand. Hethat explained he was the pet sitter for my friend Rebecca and that she had given him my address in the event of an emergency. The bird in his hand was Scruff, a hand raised Sparrow that I had raised and given to rebecca and her husbsand Chris.

He explained that he had gotten to their house, that morning, to find dying birds. I started asking him questions because I suspected something environmental. He mentioned that one of the stove burners had been left on with a pot on top of it and he'd only just noticed it that morning.

Immediately I knew the birds were dying from teflon poisioning. The burner had been on for 5 days and the pot had been on the burner all that time. The bird's aviary was on the second floor. The weather had been warm and so windows had been left open but closed the night before because the weather had become cooler. Without the fresh air all that time, the birds likey would have succumbed sooner.

I rushed to the house with him and opened all the windows. Eight birds were dead...among them, Scruff. The surviving birds we rushed to a vet where they were given oxygen and all those birds survived.

Rebecca was broken hearted when she returned home a week later and was told the loss.

That same day, she threw out all her teflon pans.

HI,

Few weeks back two babby pegion had evaluated in my balcony. today when i was trying to play with them one of had fly and gone to another flat's balcony. and where second one to whome i have hold tightly died after sometime when release him.

I feeling very much guilty that why i took them just for my fun. can you please let me know that what should i do now...

i am extreamly sorry for my behavior....

Please help me.....

I'm sorry that one baby died and the other flew away.
It's good that you realised that you shouldn't have treated them as toys, and unfortunate as this situation was, I believe in the future you will do the right thing by any more babies that you see.

Babies are delicate, and they need a stress-free environment in the company of their parents to be fed, to develop and to learn the skills they will need to survive.
You can enjoy their company by simply watching them as they grow, and getting them and their parents to trust you. Giving food to the parents is a good idea, as they will know you are a friend. Then, when the babies are about 3 weeks old and start exploring, you can give them something good to eat too, and if they already know your face they will come to you, even land on your hand, and you will have the happiness of having close contact with them and at the same time know that they are safe and healthy.

The young pigeon eating from my hand in that picture is now an adult, and a few minutes ago she flew into the house to eat from my hand again. It's wonderful, when they treat you as a friend!

Hey thanks for the reply.

one good news is that the babby that flied in morning came back this evening when i came back.

i am very happy to see him. can you suggest me how should i make him my friend and i will surely follow your guidance.

i love them and not want to harm them. can you tell me how should i help other birds ?

Thanks for all the tips, if they can be useful at least for one person to make the world a little less bad and dangerous, I'm sure it's a big victory already.

By the way, dhaval.visani: it was really bad what happened, but I'm happy that you have learned that it's not a good thing to manage other animals babies, and I'm sure you will not do it anymore in the future. At least you had the courage to come here and look for help, it shows that you are really worried and willing to change your behaviour. Thank You
