| A stretched crop is a condition seen in hand feeding baby Pigeons. It is caused by trying to give a baby too much food in one feeding, overfilling and stretching the muscles of the crop. It will appear very much like a deflated balloon and if left untreated, the food that can’t empty will develop bacteria which can make the baby very sick and can be fatal.
If your baby’s crop should become stretched, you can resolve the problem by making a crop bra. I use vet wrap which is a self sticking stretch tape. I place the wrap underneath the crop, left the crop into a normal position and bring the wrap under the wings and attach the ends together on the back of the baby. The width of the wrap should be wide enough to support the crop.
The crop bra should remain on the baby until the crop muscles are strong enough to empty the crop. which is usually just a day or two.
Please make sure to let the crop empty completely before adding more food to food already in the crop.
