Subject: My new roommate Tue Jun 15, 2010 10:13 pm
It was May 2/10, a cold rainy night here in Calgary. I had just taken my warm jammies out of the dryer when I heard the phone ring from the basement laundry room. It was about 10:30 pm, and I checked the messages when I got back upstairs. It was Charis (aka Matilda) calling from Oregon!! A young woman named Jameka had found a tiny baby pigeon abandoned in the stairwell of her apartment building..... in Calgary! Jameka had gone online and registered with the Pigeon Talk forum asking for help. Charis walked her through those important first steps then remembered that I lived in Calgary......she wondered if I could go get him? Well of course I could! I even had frozen peas in the freezer from the last rescue So I threw my rain coat on and drove down south to meet Jameka, who had a big brown box in her hand when I pulled up. Inside was the cutest little bundle of fluff and feathers. He was very quiet and bewildered, but didn't appear hurt. Jameka had managed to get 40 or so peas in him, with Charis' coaching. So away we went in my warm car. When we got home I set about feeding him some more peas and warming him up really well. I popped him into a warm bath, which he quite enjoyed. I think he knew he had a good thing going that night. He slept in warm towels, surrounded by plush stuffies and a nice warm room.
The next day I went online and managed to find a big cage for him, but he didn't spend much time in it. I carried him around with me every chance I had, feeding him peas regularly. He caught on fast! Before long he was eating them on his own. We figured he was about 10 days to two weeks old or so when I got him that first night. I spoke with Jameka via email a few days later and she thinks the cable installers at the apartment building just whisked the nests away, and Trevor almost became a casualty. I called him Trevor because the first night he slept in a box my riding helmet had come in. The brand was Trevor (or so I thought. It was something else it turns out, but he just suited Trevor anyway).
And so the last 6 weeks has been incredibly fun! He amazes me every day with his intelligence, loyalty, and sweetness. He sits on my head all the time, follows me around like a dog, and has freak-out attacks when he sees his reflection in the refrigerator. He has brought incredible joy to my days. I have watched him grow and learn new things each day. He's very brave, which impresses me. When he wants a bath, he flies into the bathroom sink and coos. He has just started going outside and visiting with the other pigeons, and he is fully flying now. The neighbours are stunned when I stand on my lawn and call 'Trevor' and he flies off the roof and lands on my extended arm.
Well, I've blathered on much too long. And I know you all know what wonderful little creatures pigeons are so I needn't go on. Here's some pics of our time together.... The first night.....

I'm going to put the video right out here because it's so cute.
I had no idea you were getting ready to put your jammies on that dreary night...it was so much earlier here in Oregon.
As I recall...our phone converstaion didn't last more than a couple of minutes because you...being that your are, didn't hesitate one second about picking up a baby whose future I was very concerned about.
Trevor is a charmer...that's for sure. I love your account of the first night and I love the video too. Mostly...I love the joy that I feel from you when you talk about him. It seems you two have a comfortable relationship and what's not to love about that.

Oh, no worries, I was only putting my jammies on because I had nothing better to do!
I should thank you for calling me that night because without you, I never would have had Trevor for a roommate. So, thank you Charis
