| ok so Lexxi chose me as her mate and now she wont leave me alone, if i leave the room she calls to me untill i return then she gets all poofy and tries to get to me so that i feel bad if im too busy to let her out of the cage. THEN when i let her out she coos and coos to me and sits on my shoulder and will peck at my face untill i pet her. if i stop petting her shell get anoyed and coo really loud. this bird will never be satisfied with me! i cant meet her demands, anyone else have this problem?
by the way i let her fly free for the first time today, it was so stressful!! she went really far away and i couldnt find her and then when i found her on a tall roof she was throwing up. so many cars around she was afraid to come down. im very scared to release her, she was so clueless and practically perched right next to 3 huge vultures, what if those were hawks??

| If you hand fed her, sorry for not knowing the back ground about her, this is very normal for her to act. Some handfed pigeons need to be with you no matter where you go & some are only like this when they are in egg mode. Some just want to be with you BUT don't want you to touch or cuddle with them. We have some of both and it can get to be a pain in the butt When we don't have time to cuddle or just sit with them out of their cages they stay locked in their cages, even if they have a mad fit about it.... our dove Raven tries very hard to unlock her cage to come out! If you want to release her to forever be free you need to do that among a feral flock that she can join not by herself or she will be hawk bait. Sounds like Lexxi may be too bonded to you even to release. | |

| do you think it is too late to release her? i kind of hope so.. my heart aches when i think about all of the horrible things out there that can do wrong to an innocent little bird whos been stuck in a cage its whole life.. but i also dont want to hold her back from being a free bird. what would you do? | |

| Please do not release her. She has no survival skills and is human imprinted. Please don't let her fly free again either. It is too much of a risk. You have done everything to make her a happy, healthy bird. You are accurate thinking of all the horrible things that could happen to her and most likely will if you release her at this point.
Pigeons make wonderful pets and can be very happy and content living indoors. If you feel she is missing the companionship of other pigeons, if possible for you, get her a mate. There are so many unreleasable birds up for adoption in need of a good home.
I hope you continue to keep her safe, protected and inside at home with you.
Louise

I personally see nothing wrong with keeping a pet/house pigeon as long as they are taken care of & allowed plenty of time outside of their cage... in the house or a contained flight out doors. Many people will disagree with my thoughts on this but I feel that our house pigeons/doves get as much excercise flying & roaming our house. In fact I have one very good example of a pigeon that did not like living in a loft situation, in fact our Precious would stop eating, sit & wait by the gate of the flight for me to bring her in. She now lives in our living room & enjoys the on goings of the house. I agree with Louise keep her as a pet if you can or find someone that wants a house pigeon if you can't.

| Is there a feral flock that visits your backyard? What about predators? Those are two of the facts to consider. I hesitated a lot before letting my Strophe fly outside, as she was also rather clueless and bonded to me, but there are no predators in the area and many members of my feral flock come right into the house (especially released ex-patients), so she knew them already, and she could follow them here. So I decided to let her go out once a day, if she wanted to, and she's been getting better and better at it. But she only stays out for half an hour or so before coming back. You mentioned lots of cars, and that's also a hazard. And where there's a lot of traffic there can be sudden unexpected loud noises that can make her panic, or disorient her. If you feel at all unsure about her safety, it's best really to play safe and let her stay in the house. Loved the description of her perched on your hand as you were trying to type! We need a photo of that! | |

| she makes the "ooo" noise. whenever i roll over in bed or open the door, basicaly any time she thinks im around she'll call to me and if i go up to the cage she fluffs up and struts around the cage sometimes cooing at the same time. shes so cute and im starting to use her affection to train her. ill say "whos a pretty lexxi birdy?" and then pet and "feed" her. so whenever i say that she gets excited and comes to me, makes it easier to put her away. | |
