| I do have a question, no RSS, how do 'you' know when new posts are added?
Freeda and her guy Freddie have moved into my cat box. Lots of loud cooing this morning so sounds like there's an egg there. I havn't checked yet but now 'she's the boss', she's busy chasing all the other birds away, including Speck and Spot.
Too strange, when Papa was on guard the twins still got theirs on the sill, not today, Freeda's being super bossy. I wonder if they'll be ok, they've been feeding here since they were babies too. Pa and his harem have moved elsewhere, he hasn't been around for awhile. But I'd rather Freeda here, more eggs for me.

At the bottom of this thread, in the lower right corner, there is an option Watch this topic for replies. Click on that and you should begin to receive notices of any new posts via your email. - farmerjoecoledge wrote:

I love the names you have chosen. It does sound like Freeda and Freedie have found their 'nesting' spot and will be laying a couple eggs soon. I would start checking every day for the eggs, if you plan on replacing them, as they should be replaced as soon as the second one is layed.

In addition to getting an email notification when you 'watch' a topic, as Cindy explained, when you come to the forum there's a heading on the bottom right hand side that says 'Today's Active Topics' (self-explanatory!) and, for members only, there's another that says 'View posts since your last visit' on the top right, just below the waving blue man. Also, when you log in, new posts should be hilighted in yellow.

| I'm having fun with the eggs again. I put the wooden ones in 2wks ago. Last week I went out and took them out of the nest but just kinda on the edge. Later I notice one egg is in the nest the other in the corner of the box (nest). I keep looking and their taking turns sitting on one egg or so I thought, today both eggs are in the nest again, so I take them both and put them in the corner away from the nest, an hour later Freeda is back in the box. Did she put them back again or is she just staying put, eggs or no eggs? I guess i'll know tomorrow, but they should be rejecting them soon. I find it odd they would put a wooden egg back in their nest, I figured they would know the difference. | |

| It's hard to know if they've put the eggs back in. If they can roll them along into the nest, it's quite possible. Or it could be they've given up on those eggs, but Freeda is getting ready to lay another two. One of our members was very surprised to find two new-born babies in the nest, after she'd replaced the eggs. Well the thing was the hen laid another two, right beside the wooden eggs, and hatched them! When pigeons are in the mood to sit on eggs, they can ignore logic and convince themselves wooden eggs are the real thing, especially as the hen laid two eggs, now there are two eggs in the nest, so what else could they possibly be? | |

| Well looks as though Franseska (new name) isn't giving up yet. I went out today and moved them out of the nast again. Now she's back in the nast so I assume she's put them back again. Silly. I need to tell the world that Freeda is a Freddie. When he was a baby I noticed a bird trying to mate with him. He's a small bird, and yes it's the same bird, I thought he was a she for 6mo's, had me fooled. All the cooing he was doing was to attract a mate. The window was open and he would come in and go in the box and coo. Right after I put the nest outside I got the shock. Freeda/Freddie was doin the male part. It all makes sence now. So then I renamed his mate to Franseska. Freddie will sit on the wooden eggs too, but goes off to where ever it is he sleeps. So there you go. Freddie/Freeda the lone runt scores big. Franseska is a bigger bird, but more normal size. Also, there wasn't no 2wks from when i saw them mating until there were eggs. It was only like 3-4 days. Do they mate more than once? If not Franseska's eggs would be from from a different bird, no? | |

| The normal time to lay eggs after mating seems to be 9 days but yes, they mate more than once. Interesting development on Freeda being Freddie after all! They totally fool us sometimes! I remember years ago asking how to distinguish male from female pigeons, and an experienced pigeon person said something I will never forget: "Only pigeons can make that distinction for sure, and even they can make mistakes sometimes..." | |
