| Well, they are not really balcony pigeons, but window's ones. I always see in front of my apartament some pigeon taking sun bath in the other flat, so one day I try to leave them some seeds in my window, they didn't come to me for one month but in october I saw that seeds disappered and there were some poops ! yeah ! =) So I start to leave some seeds every day, and now they call me in the morning if I don't leave them something =) For example, today I want to sleep till 9.00 o'clock because every day I wake up early, and I go to sleep late, but they started to coo and I had to wake up at 8.00 a.m. ! One of them today didn't fly away while I was giving them the seeds, and I was really happy to see that they are starting to trust in me! However, in Italy a lot of people hate pigeons, my cotentants too... =( I want to help them during the winter. Ok, I konw that two of them are a couple, the other 2 I don't know if they are male o female. I leave here some pictures =) these two are Sid and Nancy, the couple I took this picture when they didn't come to my window. And there are my little chiken eating and doing a mess ! The first pictures, when I couldn't stay with the window opened because they fliy away And pictures took today! | |

| Awwww... how sweet! It's wonderful when they start to trust you and come to you! Mind you, they can easily get used to being fed at a particular time, and I suppose you feed them early during the week before going for your classes. Maybe at the weekend you could leave them some seeds on the windowsill before going to bed, and they might let you sleep until later. Might... | |

| That's a shame! You need to be careful then, try not to be seen feeding them. In my town it's the same, but there is an exception: you can feed them in your own property. Which is fine if it's only one house and you own it, but in apartment blocks it can be problematic, as most of the other people will probably be against it, and they may complain, or even take action to have the pigeons killed. For people who are renting it's even worse, because they may be evicted from their flat. I don't want to sound like a spoil-sport, but if there's a chance that you and the pigeons will be persecuted because you feed them, it may be best not to encourage them to come to your window to be fed. We love them, and want to help them make it through the winter, but sometimes we need to think twice before deciding what's best for them in the long term. All the best for you and your pigeon friends. Have a good weekend! | |

| You're right Teresa, but I saw two things that made me act in this way : 1- these pigeons live around these flats, so they come to lean on every windows or roofs, I could say that I've never feed them, they don't have the proofs, also because I feed them in the eraly morning, so no one look out from the windows, but I have to be carefull 2- I saw that in our place under the flats where you can take your car, someone give them bread sometimes, and also out from my flats I always see some pigeons eating bread in the street.
I hope that if they leave these people making what they want, well, they could leave me giving them real food... People don't understand that a pigeon could transmitt illness only if it's weak, and if it don't find food in winter it become ill...
In my city there is also a sort of program to decrease pigeons populations... they are using pills for neuter them, but I read somewhere taht these pills could give a lot of problems to pigeons, because they are dangerous for their health... | |

| It's very good that you have other neighbours who like the pigeons and feed them! That should make your life easier, but caution is a good thing! The contraceptive pills can have side effects, especially the hormone-based ones like Avisteril, but I read somewhere that in Italy they have approved Ovocontrol. The manufacturers of this one say that it is safe, and many animal protection associations and pigeon advocates are in favour of their use. I worry about it, as the decrease in population caused by it seems too high, but between that and killing pigeons to reduce their population, pills are definitely millions of times better! | |

| could I ask you something? Today I see on one of my window's pigeons one of those terrible pigeon flies... there is a method to pull them away even if I couldn't get next to the pigeons ? For example, if I spray something in the air before they come to eat...there is a possibility they take the spray? Or maybe I'm foolish? | |

| Unfortunately that won't work, as the spray needs to fall directly on the fly, or on the feathers that the fly is hiding in. I've tried treating my ferals' food with Ivermectin, as this usually kills any blood-sucking parasites, but I didn't see much of an improvement. Reinfection happened very quickly on some, and the others seemed to have them all the time -- maybe they hadn't eaten enough medicated food. | |

| What a lovely sight to see first thing in the morning! But remember to be discrete, it would be awful if you and them got into trouble! | |
