Hawkeye is a big, tough one-eyed white pigeon found by a nice couple a few years back. He is very aware of his name (when I call to him he responds by turning his good side to me) and I often have mock fights with him - Hawkeye vs the evil hand. He always wins.
Well, I was sitting on the stone bench outside the aviary, idly watching the birds doing their busy thing, when Hawkeye flew up to the wire and clung on level with me, looking out at me as if asking for something.
I thought "twigs?" and fetched some tobacco stems. Yep, that was it. I stood breaking them into manageable halves, while he stood looking up at me. Soon as I put them inside, there he was back and forth adding fresh twigs to his nest for his mate, Serenity.
Not the first time one of them has done that, but it is pretty rare, so I think Hawkeye must be quite a smart bird
- he sure knew me as a provider of pigeon needs anyway
