| A friend of mine in France adopted a female pigeon to give company to her male pet pigeon. Ella the female is in a poor condition, her feathers don't shine, they are dry and on her belly she has practically no feathers. She had an overgrown beak that was trimmed by a vet (blood!!!), it grew back 5 mm in 10 days. The beak is now also not really split, but looks like a human nail that is in bad condition, dont find the word in English. I was thinking about a lack of vitamines... Anybody has a clue what is wrong? Before her adoption, she was a feral, but very close to humans, I suspect she might be someones escaped pet. When she was caught, she had an old break of the wing and had been severely pecked by others, she was too weak to get enough in competition for food. Here you can see her just before her adoption, she is the white one: Thanks Myriam | |

| Myriam...do you know if she has been treated for any thing...or had a fecal exam? I suspect there are several things going on with this sweet bird. The poor feather condition can be caused by canker, coccidia and worms as well as poor nutrition. If she was in my care, I would worm and treat for her canker and then feed her a good diet with added vitamins.
As for the beak...if she can eat, I would leave it alone. If your friend trims it at all, the trimming should be in smalll amounts so as to avoid bleeding. Over grown beak can be caused by differnt things and it could be that at one time, part of her beak broke off as a result of injury. Once that happens, the beak does tend to over grow.

| What a sweet little pij. She's beautiful, despite her poor feather condition. My best wishes to her, her mate and your friend. Please keep us posted on how things go. | |

| I advised her to treat for worms, tricho (canker), coxi and salmonella, I already sent her all meds one week ago she was going to start with de canker meds yesterday. She had alos made an appointment with a third vet, the first one claimed she had no salomnella without checking faeces; euh?? , the second one discovered an old break in the wing by X ray, but did no fecal check... hope this one can tell us some more, vets in France aer awfull with pigeons, or dont know anything, or PTS them immediately I'll keep you updated as soon as I have news myself, did not see her on msn today... | |

| Thank you Myriam. There is no reason for that bird to be PTS so I hope she wasn't convinced to do so. | |

| Animal lover - he? Why are people always so quick with killing a creature? And they call themselves animal lovers. Cannot believe this... | |

Agree Myriam, she is such a sweet bird. Really hope things get better with her and your friend succeeds in getting her back to health. As Charis said, there is no reason to put her down , so hoping nothing of that sort awaits this sweet one. Will be eager to hear what happened...
