| Thanks for posting about Rudi, Petra! He's a brave pigeon, and you've done wonders with him! I found it very interesting to read about what you used and how, as my methods are quite different, and it's great to find out as much as possible, so we can use whichever method will be best for a particular bird, or best suited to the meds etc that are available to us. I always have hydrogen peroxide in the house to staunch bleeding, as well as for disinfection, but it's great to hear that baking soda and flour also work! I thought I could see a bit of nylon thread on his left foot in the photos, but that must have been a loose bit that just happened to get in shot. His foot bandages are very neat! Do you suppose he went on to try to impress Pina by claiming to have had a ski accident? I'm so glad he's doing well and found love, too! | |

| Appreciate the update, Petra. Do you think there might still be a ' fine' hair entangled that is unable to detect which may be contributing to the continued swelling? He's sure looking good though. | |

| I don't think so because now it is much better and the deep cuts are closed. I rather think that the infection was still in his upper foot (it felt very warm) and was coming down slowly. You could watch how it moved around. I am glad that his toes did not discolour which would have been a sign of gangrene - as it happened with Paulchen on one of his toes - but nevertheless his feet will never look normal again and his toes will remain twisted in one way or another. But apparently he will be able to live with this.

| Petra, I haven't gone back and read the entire thread, but do you have him on an antibotic? Also, do you have any medicam? Not only would that help with his pain, but it is also an antiflamatory and would help with the swelling. All in all, you have really done a great job with him He is greatly improved from when you took him in. He is a real sweetheart I'm so glad he and Pina have eachother. Louise | |

| Louise, I did not put him on antibiotics - and unfortunately I do not get metacam here in Germany without prescription. I bathed his feet daily for several weeks, made a compression with arnica pain fluid each day after cleaning his feet, treated him with Rescue drops and holy ashes from Sai Baba. This all helps to desinfect, treat the pain and helps the healing process - and it did. I cannot get antibiotic cream here in Germany without prescription either and I did not want to give him antibiotics orally because besides his injuries he was a completely healthy pigeon - otherwise he would not have survived this ordeal before. Apparently I caught him in time before any internal problems appeared.
And as I already said - these pictures are from beginning of September - in the meanwhile the swelling has come down completely and his feet do not feel hot any more. The colour is normal and he runs around the whole day!!!

| Petra...I too wonder about hair or thread that is difficult to see still around the foot. I have a link to a pet pharmacy in the UK where you can order metacam on line. I'll go find it. | |

| Thanks for the link Charis, but they do not ship to Germany!
There is no thread or hair any more - I have checked it several times with a magnifying glass.

| After you thought that there might be more hair in his feet - I think it was a misperception from the photos - I checked Rudi's feet again yesterday very carefully with a magnifying glass, millimeter for millimeter and I realized that there is nothing in it any more. What you probably thought might be thread were tiny pieces of dead skin which are falling of now, piece by piece. And I also realized that both toes where I thought might be broken are not broken at all - on one is only a small lump of dried pus left that becomes smaller each day and the other toe which is showing forward instead of backwards is moving. Maybe a nerve has still not recovered and may never but the toe is definitely not broken. The deep cuts in the upper feet have completely disappeared and the cuts on the toes are covered by new tissue. There is only some dead skin on top of them, looking a bit dark but that will fall off eventually. I am not going to poke into his flesh to remove it. Here are some better photos from midth of September - in the meanwhile the feet look even better: check on page 1 how his feet looked like originally! Those are completely different feet now and I am so glad about it. But it took really a long of time: Rudi is here now for 2 months! Oh and btw - what I have realized - his wattle is completely white again - at the beginnig it was a brownish grey - maybe a sign for his infection/injuries? Did you realize these changes in your birds? | |

| That's a remarkable improvement! Thanks for the update, Petra, it's great to hear how he improved. Thinking about the swelling, and the care you took to check that there was no thread left, I was thinking that it may have been the dead skin, that has gradually begun to fall off, that may have been constricting the foot at first. That type of skin, rather plastic-looking, is just like a callous/corn, and forms to protect the underlying tissue from the damage done by the thread. If at all possible, it should be removed together with the thread, so that it stops constricting the toe and new tissue can grow -- but I know you couldn't do that, because of the onset of bleeding. So the products you've been using to treat him must have softened it bit by bit, and... well, the results speak for themselves! WELL DONE! | |

WELL DONE! Teresa, thank you dear - you nailed it exactly. I knew I had to remove as much as possible of old crusts, blood, dirt, poop and God knows what else - that's why I bathed his feet each day for several weeks. But after that terrible bleeding I became even more careful and did not want to push this further. With a simple sewing needle (desinfected of course) and a very small scissors I removed what I could - repeatedly - and I am so glad as it is right now. Rudi was an excellent patient, absolutely stoic and totally calm. Apparently he knew exactly what I did and he was not afraid. An amazing pijjie which I love nearly as much as Pina
