| ...Oh brother...you are new. Actually...it can be difficult as both gender will mimic the behavior of the opposite gender. For example, I have a hen named Romeo. The cock birds, generally, chase the hen bird and drag their tail on the ground or floor. Still...I have observed hens birds doing the same. The only way to know for sure, is if one lays eggs. Do you know how old your birds are? | |

None of my birds havent layed any eggs yet! I dont even know if it is matting season yet! I take it they aren't banded then. We get mostly adults here at the sanctuary so we find it easier to just put them with another 2 or 3 birds and watch unless you end up with all the same sex you can usually watch & tell who is what gender.

The two indian fantail pigeons i got at a livestock action and they didnt come banded. and the other pigeons I got from my amish friend that has lots of pigeons and he dont band.
Now I did notice that my pigeon with the tumor gets pecked at sometimes. does that mean that she is a she? now the other ones act the same as everyone else! The one with the tumor acts the same too, but sometimes she get pecked!

They may be too young yet & the pigeon with the tumor may be getting pecked becuase it HAS the tumor. Sometimes animals/birds will pick on the weaker/ill bird becuase its different & not feeling well.

| You can also try showing them a mirror. If they coo or go in circles they might be a male. | |

| No, that's what I used on some of mine. It works pretty well if they pay any attention to the mirror. (Some of them just ignore it...) | |

| Luna is right...I forgot about that. The males do like to admire themselves in the mirror. In fact...that would be a good thing for you to put in your loft. They will love it. | |

First and foremost, welcome to Pigeon Angels, John. It's great to have you here. There are a few ways to 'suspect' a specific sex. Males will usually 'coo' where the females will 'grunt on occasion. At least mine do. Males will also dance, circle, bow their head and fan their tail when trying to get the attention of a pretty little female. And yes, the mirror works good as well. Our Mikko is constantly checking out the handsome fella in the mirror. BTW: The fantail in your avatar is beautiful.

But yet in the Human world the Girls are the one that love to look at them selves in the mirror and the males can care less! So I guess there is a world out there were males are the pretties LOL Just joking everyone!

| You do have a point there. With many bird species the male birds are the most colorful. | |

| You know, this reminds me of a documentary I saw on TV (it may have been on the Discovery Channel) that showed the courting rituals of the Bedouins, nomad people living in the Sahara desert. The men, imitating the behaviour of birds, paint their faces, decorate themselves and then do a bird-like dance, with lots of eyelash batting, while the women watch. It's very cute, and very, very funny! At the end of the dance, the women (starting with the highest-ranking ones) pick their favourite. Can you imagine a scene like this at your local nightclub?... | |
