PostSubject: advice needed for baby ring neck dove   advice needed for baby ring neck dove Icon_minitimeWed Apr 13, 2011 4:23 pm

Yester day my friend saw a baby dove and it parents being attacked by a crow the parents were protecting there young after the crow was chased away the baby sat on the and seemed like it was too young to fly but was left alone in case it could flutter up in a bush to safty and the parents were watching. With a close eye keept on it all after noon it managed to flutter up in to a bushy rose bush 5 ft off the floor where it stayed the night this morning i poped round to take a look mum and dad r still arround and it was still sitting in thw middle of the rose bush as i tried to pick it up it fluttered away then flew it got quiet high off the ground but when it tried to land it missed and fell to the floor so i went and picked it up and poped it back in the rose bush it seem a ok weight and had a full crop its throat was clear but it seemed small and didnt have a great deal of feather looked to young to be a fledgling but could be wrong as it can fly. Was hoping through out the day the parents would encourage it up higher but i have recently been informed it is still in the same place as this morning i am a little concerned its a little low down thought is well hidded and it is quiet cold out tonight and as it is not greatly feathered and no parents sitting with it to keep it warm it might get to cold obviously i dont really want to disturb it as the parents are looking after it but what shoul i do with it to night is it best just to leave it and it will be fine or should i help it we left it out last night but as it is chilly at night at the mo i just dont want it to get cold and die.

Thanks

This is a difficult situation as the parents do seem to be feeding the baby, which you don't want to disturn, however the baby is too young to escape a predator. It also sounds like he's young enough and the weather is cool enough that he still needs supplement heat.

I know it's quite late in London, but my suggestion would be to bring the baby in, at least at night, and place it on a towel lined heating pad, set on low or place under a low wattage lamp.

If you are able to keep an eye on it during the day, you could probably put him out and see if the parents will continue to feed him. If not, then he will need some intervention.

Many thanks for keeping an eye on the little one. Pigeon angel

Please keep us posted on how things are going.

Taking the baby would depend on it's age. How old does it look? If it were far from being able to fly, then I would take him home, but if he looks like he is old enough to start flying very soon, then I would leave him and just keep an eye on him. How old does he look?

sorry i did send another message but it obviously didnt send, it is difficult to say but he is fully feathered but it look like mainly down feather but he does have some proper feathers too. I mentioned i my 1st message that he can sort of fly he was able to on the first day fly from the ground up in to a 5 ft bush then this morning when i tryed to grab him he got about 8 ft in the air and traveled about 6 meters before trying to land and missed lol he stayed out last night and seemed fine i would have said he was a fledgling which the normally start fledging at 4- 5 weeks dont they? But by looking at him i would say he is about 3 - 4 week at a guess i know he is still being fed but it is just ashame he didnt fly into a highee bush during the day. He seems to just want to sit there in the same place.
Yes unfortunatly i have work so am unable to watch him during the day and he is not at my house his is in a flats garden near a car park so am woried he might get run over if he falls down. He isnt greatly responsive when u touch him he slowly moves away a bit and eventually flys but not great reactions. Its difficult but most of me is saying leave him alone out side and part of me is saying bring him in for the night where its warm and safe but i just dont know my gut feeling says to leave him out and check him in the morning make sure the parents are arround and check if he has food in his crop then tomorrow night assess the situation again and decide on what to do.
Yes it is late here it is 2:10 am at the moment the birds start waking at about 4 am so i think i will leave him and check tomorrow moning and see whats what.
Thanks for all your help i am goin to go to bed now well try to any way if i can stop thinking about tne dove and worrying about him.

Yes, we'll be waiting for an update. Hope he is safe enough in that bush, although he won't stay in it forever. Wonder where the nest is.

yes i know i have know idea where the nest is there are lots of tall dence bushes and trees arround the area. I check this morning and put some more seed and water out for them the baby is still in the rose bush having a second look at it this morning makes me believe it looks like a 4 week old it is fully feathered apart from round its beak the feathers are through but still in their casing. He seems very bright and it take a few mins to look and spot him hidden in the bush mum and dad are both arround they chased off another dove this morning so they seem to be doing a good job at protecting their baby. I think it will prob be best left alone and just monitored every day to make sure its ok. If it rains then i will have to make sure it doesnt get too wet fingers cossed. Thanka for every ones help x

I think you're probably doing the right thing by him. Hope it doesn't rain on the poor baby. Please let us know how it goes.

Just to let every one know that the baby dove flew up in to a higher bush/tree where it was so hidden by leaves i didnt see it after that, the parents were still around untill the other day and there was no sign of any of them any more so i think the baby must have managed to fly a little well i hope thats what has happened fingers crossed Happy

Thanks for the update. Most likely all is well with them now. Luckily they were good parents and stuck around for him. They're probably doing great someplace.
