Subject: Dearest little Penny, the most loving pidge. Tue Nov 29, 2011 8:39 am
Little Penny Pidge was rushed to me by a heartbroken yung lady who knows me from my towns local forum. She had found this nearly dead little pidge out on the street, and did what no-one else had bothyered to do. She stopped, and picked her up. Racheal could tell this little bird was close to dying and made a frantic appeal on the forum for someone to contact me. When little Penny arrived, she was practically lifeless, barely concious, unable to even stand. her crop was hollow, empty. I wrapped her in soft fleece, prepared a warm mix of chickfeed, diaoralite (Like pedialite) metroniazole (sp) and a powerful suppliment/booster for extremely sick birds. gently getting the nourishment and hydrating formula with painstaking care into her beak, I saw signs of life beginning to show. Within ten - fifteen minutes she was desperately guzzling at her nourishment. Penny had severe problems, her face was covered in caked on dried infection, her eye was scabbed over and sealed closed. vets confirmed that id she survived, she could not really ever be left to cope in the wild. from that moment on, she became mine, my pet, my little friend. here she is that first night after I had cleaned her up slightly, fed her and warmed her. The sleep she fell into this time was not one caused by pain and illness and starvation, it was one that she relaxed into, feeling safe, warm, and nourished.
As she seemingly gained strength, she bonded so tightly to me! I helped her learn to fly...Oh dear! I could not MOVE without squeaks of dismay and annoyance accompanied by frantic flapping as she flew to me to be with me at all times! She wasnt 'mine', I was 'HERS' ! At night, she would fuss and cry and squeak if I tried to settle her into her care tank. No. She was having none of that. She had to sleep on my shoulder, her face and shoulders tucked under my hair. As I have to sleep sitting almost upright because of my lungs, this wasnt a problem thank goodness!
She LOVED her belly! Every mealtime was a scramble of eager flapping wings, guzzling intake, and splashed of formula going everywhere Even when she was weaning nicely and eating by herself, she still demanded the closeness and the babying of that bottle feed once or twice a day. Just look at the little piggy guzzling!
Sadly, her time with me was not to be for very long despite almost daily visits to the vet.. her problems overcame her, and I knew on 'that' day that it was very close to her time to move on. Penny would not allow me to put her down even for a few seconds that day, she would just cry, cry, cry until she was held snuggly in my arms, then she would instantly become calm, and just sleep. I simply held her, kissing her and softly stroking her head in the way that she loved so much, until her sleep deepened to the point of her freedom. Every now and again she would open her eyes and look up at me as though to check i was still there, then rest her head back on my hand and sleep again. After a while, the soft movement of her breathing slowed, and ceased. It was as simple and as peaceful as that. Penny was free.

You have such a gift with these beautiful little beings, Annie.
Penny seemed so vibrant in the second video, looking as though she would be able to conquer her problems. I am so very sorry that was not to be. Bless her litte heart.
Thank you for sharing this adorable baby with us.

What a sweet baby!
Thank you for sharing the videos, Annie, I couldn't stop grinning watching the second one, when she just wouldn't slow down or give up, even when her crop was full!!
It's very sad that she passed away so soon, always hard to accept when we're dealing with youngsters and we see all that future promise cut short... But she knew happiness and security! Her little face, falling asleep in the first video, says it all!
Bless her little soul, and bless you for taking such good care of her!

Thankyou Cindy x She gave so much love, and asked simply that I loved her in return. So little to ask, and so very easy grant. I too thought that somehow, she would overcome her problems, and my few days with her always began with a smile; simply just feeling her warmth snuggled against my neck and cheek, and the way she would stretch as she awoke, how she would squeak at me so annoyed when I walked away from her to make her morning bottle. Then she would squeak with impatience because mixing and making her formula took twice as long one-handed... This got easier when she learned to sit unaided on my shoulder and hang on to my hair or my ear with her beak for balance... She was smart! I wish she could have stayed, my little velcro bird, but I will always have in my heart the love that the little pure-soul gave me in her short time. She was precious

Teresa, she was such a little guzzle-guts! I had to work out how many ounces her crop could take, and stick to that when I made her feeds, even though she would be most displeased when her bottle ran dry She would have gulped till she popped, Im sure, and I think I would have been wing-slapped to death had I pulled a not-quite-empty feeding bottle away from her. She had to SEE it was empty, then and only then, did she begin to realise that she was full

He is far above the age level to eat on his own. My 3 week old pigeon eats on his own already, Just saying yo, best thing to do is tap your hand on the ground where some seeds are ., Pigeon that size should be capable of eating on his own. And as for my 3 week old babie, He is fed by his parents too and Me. The little guy only eats so little on his own , not enough to be fully on his own. But u catch my drift eh? always good to train them how to eat seeds , Gets them ready for there wild life. I'm really sorry to hear that he didn't make it. That's messed eh. sometimes we go threw that. I know how it feels . But you did all you can , that's what matters. I'm sure he is above in Heavens eyes now

Hi Splizzlah :) I agree, Penny was very babyish for her age, but if you look back on my post, she was indeed eating on her own, she just clung to that closeness of her bottle feed for whatever reason. Security perhaps? Developmental delay? No one knows how or why she became grounded and so sick. Yeah, it does hurt when they slip away no matter how much we try and do, but it happens, like you say. *In heavens eyes* ..... I like that :)
