| Hey whats up. I am having a problem never noticed before on a Pigeon, After giving vitamins to my Pigeon. I noticed a week later he has very large claws. Sure large claws whatever right? Yeah but he is getting them stuck on my shirt, socks, and some other things too. here is a pic i tried my best to get a good shot. Should I take him to a professional to cut his nails? or what? i know cats get long claws and need them cut. I guess its same for birds? any advice would be really helpful. Thank you Here is a little picture too I made for my Baby. LOVE YOU HOMIE! | |

| Hi Chris, I replied on the Pigeon Angels Facebook page. Yes, the claws can be trimmed a little, just the white bit, as you said, and that will make things easier. If Homie was living outside, he would have a chance to wear down his nails on the ground and on other rough surfaces. Indoors, a lot of the surfaces that pigeons walk and perch on are really very smooth, so the nails don't get worn enough. If you can get hold of a brick as an alternative perch for him, that would be great to keep his nails filed down the natural way -- he'd probably love it, and less work for you! P.S. The photo montage looks great! | |

| Thanks lol. Yeah I trimmed them with human nail clippers. Just the white part. I would never have done anything like that without real bird trimmers If i didnt witness it being done on a cat, And tried it myself (on a cat). Homie did absolutely great. He felt more comfortable my g/f holding his feet while I did a lil bit . His nails make him look more hansom then ever. I will look for a brick, I put a broken model I got from Florida of a lizard in their above his cage actually. It is brick like material. He loves flying on it. Even flies on my g/f now too. I put a mirror in their > He won't leave it! Matilda said male pigeons like mirrors, and also mentioned about a brick too. I didn;t think about the nails until i seen how large they've gotten. He's perfect now. [PS] I will buy bird trimmers for next time Im just really broke.....Extremely broke quote="Teresa"]Hi Chris, I replied on the Pigeon Angels Facebook page. | That's excellent! I have used human nail clippers on the cats' and birds' nails too sometimes, with no problems. If they're really good and sharp, all you need to do is trim bit by bit around the tip of the nail, rather than trying to trim them in one cut, which must have been what you did. I've never had any nail splinter or anything. You'll need to take a picture of Homie standing on the lizard, so funny! | |
