Got a new rescue -- an adult pigeon with a slightly droopy right wing, very light with extensive muscle tissue loss, starvation poops and no desire to eat or drink. All he wanted to do was get back to his nest across the road, where another pigeon waited for him on the ledge. He tried to fly up there, but couldn't. There are no breaks or visible injuries. GI tract infection very likely, possibly Salmonella. Internal canker and/or cocci too. Rasping sound could be air sac inflammation, but there are no discharges/sneezing. The vet said to quarentine him, feed him well and put him on Flagyl+Synulox, wormer later. You know how it goes: gotta be prepared for the worst, but hope for the best. I called him Amber. Photos tomorrow.
Got a photocopy of Tigga's preliminary necropsy results -- poor little thing! What didn't he have!? Pneumonia, hepatitis, anemia and various lesions would have been enough, without the damaged intestinal mucosa with necrotic tissue... I'll post a translation soon.
At least Amber has a good chance. Please do post Tigga's results. I'm very interested.

Oh, I hope so, poor thing. It was so sad watching him looking up at the ledge and trying to jump! Here are Amber's pics:

I will. They're pulling all the stops with the cultures this time, to check for mycobacteria (they suspect tuberculosis), protozoans and fungi. ($$$) The vets have been amazing, though. They charged me nothing for Amber's check-up today, neither did they charge for Persephone's consultation, hospitalization or the vet's time -- I only paid for meds, X-rays and the cremation.
Guess what I've got in my bathroom...
Half an hour ago I thought I was going to have an early night, to be ready for a very early start tomorrow. Silly me! Two pairs of seagulls were streaking through the dark sky, screaming. I went to the window, and even commented to Soni, 'What's up? I wonder if someone disturbed their nests.' Then LĂdia phoned me. 'Come quick, there's a seagull in the middle of the street, and she could get run over!' So...... it was a baby. Flew out the nest, but couldn't fly high enough yet to get back up there. Henry (the Navigator) is in the bathroom, with catfood and water, but I'm not sure if he knows how to eat by himself, and I've never tube-fed a seagull... (panic) I'll phone the Marine Animal Rescue first thing.

Amber is a pretty little pij. Thanks for sharing his photos with us, Teresa.
And Henry!! What an adorable and beautiful little seagull. I'm so glad you were able to get him off the streets and out of harm's way.
Will be waiting for updates on these sweet rescues.
I hope you are still able to get a good night's sleep.

Henry has gone off to the marine animal sanctuary this morning. I know that at least one of the biologists there, Marisa, has lots of experience tube-feeding seagulls, and that's a big relief. He had eaten a little of the cat food, but not nearly enough, I think. Jorge, who collected him, was happy with his general appearance and said he probably just needed a little TLC. Seagulls were circling the house in the morning, but not in the afternoon. How do they know?!
Amber seems to be doing Ok. He's very alert and impatient to be freed, and his poops are no longer bright green, but neither does the food look properly digested. He's taking Flagyl and Synulox twice a day, and today I also put a spot-on wormer on the back of his neck (so as not to overload his digestive system).
No more string injuries at the moment. Perhaps the ferals have taken up pottery instead... I'll let you know if any lumps of clay fall out of the sky!

It's great knowing that Jorge thought Henry was looking quite well. "Seagulls were circling the house in the morning, but not in the afternoon. How do they know?!" Perhaps they watched you take Henry in and Jorge take him out.
I'm glad Amber is holding his own.

Another Saturday dawn, another attack -- this time, human on human.
Just after I'd logged off and gone to bed, there were screams coming from a nearby street. You never know if it's for real, as young people coming out of the bars will scream their heads off just for kicks, but this time it was different. The police had just arrived and were talking to a young couple, who were cut and bruised, and bleeding from the face and hands. They were allegedly attacked by two young men, who had fled the scene. The woman thought they'd stolen her bag, but a policeman found it tossed into the porch of a nearby building. She was hysterical, quite drunk and difficult to calm down, so I stayed with them until the ambulance arrived. The locals were all indoors, peering out of the windows. If they saw something, nobody came down to make a statement. Scaredy-cats!

Good heavens Teresa - you are really an angel and with great personal courage! Please be very careful nonetheless and take good care for yourself. If more people were like you - then no-one needed to be afraid any more. Shame on the locals but it's the same in Germany too. It makes me sick

Great logo! Thanks, Cindy! But today I've lost my entitlement to anything angelic... When I took the dog to the park, I saw my friends LĂdia (the cat girl) and Paul (the pigeon guy) being harrassed by three boys AND their parents for standing between the boys and the flock of pigeons. The pigeons were trying to have a drink, and the boys wouldn't let them, chasing them and screaming, and all the while taunting my friends and laughing at them. LĂdia was in tears.
So I shouted at them, 'Wanna game of chase? You got it! Ashe, let's get them!' We chased them off the park in seconds! No points for diplomacy there, but they were little monsters!

I am so sorry for what your friends (and the pigeons) we faced with. For young kids to act like that is bad enough, but to have the parents join in makes me sick to the core.
All I can say to you and Ashe is LOTS!! You know, sometimes there is no time for diplomacy.

And some VERY : Amber has recovered completely and was set free this evening. Here are some pics and videos.
1) Amber exercising -- the first instance where you can see him using his wings equally. Shortly after I took this video, he actually flew all around the room!
2) He appears to have an admirer...
3) He's been a very impatient patient, except when I took him to look out the window -- then he perched on my hand quite contentedly.
4) His Majesty today, with his new band and perfectly symmetrical wings. (That's not a mountain of poop, by the way, it's cork!)
5) ... and textbook poops!
6) And finally... the release! As we got near the place where I'd picked him up, he started getting terribly excited. Once the basket was opened, he finally got to fly to the ledge he so wanted to reach (but couldn't) a week ago. His mate was still feeding with the flock in the nearby square, but joined him shortly after.
I love happy endings!

Loved the release video. It's wonderful to see them spread their wings and fly high again, isn't it?
You did an awesome job with her, Teresa.

Teresa - I could not agree more to what Cindy said. Look at the sparkle in his eyes when he knew that he would be flying again soon. There is nothing more wonderful than to see this kind of expectation.

Yep! You know what it's like, if it's your pets producing healthy poops you take it for granted and never photograph them, you only really keep tabs on the convalescing birds!
