It's interesting to see the wide variety in nests my birds build. Some use only a few twigs. Some like lots of feathers. Penny is the champ nest builder here. He and his hen nest on the floor in a corner since his hen can't fly. When she is getting ready to lay, he goes into a frenzy of nest building. He zooms around grabbing every piece of nest material he can find. He gets very agitated when he runs out. And he can't get enough! He'll be waiting for me impatiently at the loft door when I bring more. I keep a small stack of newspapers in the loft, folded up in a corner. Penny will drag whole sheets of it to use in his nest! I wish I could catch him at it and get pictures but he always does it when I'm not around.
When they gave up on this nest and I went to clean it out, I found what felt like 5 pounds of pine needles!
Today I found that he'd stolen several sheets of newspaper for the new nest he's building. It's as if he lines the "hallway" to the nest with the paper. Somehow he rips some of the paper into smaller pieces. All this was done today.
Here's a video of the busy little guy. And this video is only a couple of minutes. He's been doing this all day!

Oh that was just too cute. Loved the video also. He's a very pretty bird. She's a lucky little hen to have such a hard working mate.
