| Spartrix is the only medication I used to give my canker rescues (when I was rescuing) and it worked wonderfully. | |

| I've never had great results with spartrix here. I think that canker strains varry from region to region and here, metronidazole works better. | |

Just very curious, can Crash pick up seeds or any food?

That's interesting. When I saw a bag of Metronidazole hanging from Chuck's IV pole before his surgery I kind of laughed. I relate it more to birds than I do people. :That\\\'s so f

| Sorry for dropping out of sight for a few days -- I was juggling several non-pigeon-related crises.
I took the baby to a vet on Thursday, and the vet thinks the canker is gone -- she took throat and mouth swabs as well as swabs of the growths, and she couldn't find any Trichomoniasis protozoa. She thinks it's a secondary skin infection. She presecribed 200 ml Zosyn injections twice a day, for 7 days, along with a once-a-day application of Silver Sulfadiazine cream directly on the growths.
I can't tell if it's helping yet. I'll post pictures shortly...

| Thanks, Jim. I actually just left you a phone message because I was wondering. Has the canker in the nose decreased? | |

| Jim, So glad to hear from you and know that the baby is doing better. Good news that the vet assessed the canker to be no longer active. Looking forward to seeing the pictures. Louise | |

| Although the pictures below are a bit disturbing, the baby is fine. It was pretty scary, but the entire mass of growths on the side of her face fell off today, exposing the sinus cavity, the mouth, the tounge etc. Fortunately, Dr. Latas at the Arizona Bird Clinic gave the baby a clean bill of health, saying that it looks like healthy tissue had been growing and healing underneath the mass of growths. The baby showed minimal distress, and possibly some relief. over the loss of tissue and seems able to eat and drink without significant problems. She's energetic, has a great attitude and seems to be doing just fine. She's actually been handling this situation a lot better than me. I'm applying several drops of a mixture of artificial tears and sulfadiazine twice a day to the newly exposed tissue, as directed by Dr. Latas. Here are some scary pictures of the baby and the chunk of her face that fell off: Although these pictures look terrible, the baby is doing fine, and seems to be in no pain. In retrospect, this was probably unavoidable in light of the extent of the original canker infection. | |

| Amazing! I would have been terrified if I'd had to deal with that, and I can imagine how you must have felt! I'm so glad to hear the good news, and that she continues to improve and seems relieved at losing those growths! She does look relaxed and alert! Thank you for the updates and the photos -- I'm learning LOTS from this thread! | |

| As I wasn't around for some time I just found this thread again. Heaven - I never knew that canker could develop such a nasty result. Unbelievable how you saved this little angel's life and what the devlopment is. It is also amazing how the bird coped with the whole situtation - what a brave and couragious creature. She must have been in a lot of pain according to the photos. I am grateful for your whole photo documentary - this shows perfectly what can be done with knowledge, care and lots of love. Thanks for letting us learn about it. This bird would have died a slow and long death if you would not have found her. I am glad you did. | |
