It has been a pure joy to read. May God/your God/whatever you believe in, bless you all. This thread is just beautiful. Thank you very much for your kind words and good wishes. Actually what surprises me is to find so many people in this forum who are trying to help a bird that they never saw or touched from thousands of kilometers away. When I first sit down in front of the computer to search for online help for Kader, I first looked for local pigeon forums in Istanbul. I have found one and in it I have found two different threats started by people who found injured pigeons. In both cases the only advise these people got was to kill the poor birds so that they would not suffer. After reading those in a state of shock, I decided to search international forums and found this one. You can guess my relief and surprise when I immediately received many helpful responses. Teresa even offered me to mail the necessary medication all the way from Portugal!. They are all angels, indeed! Best Wishes.

Yes, I remember that one of you told me about the mirror, earlier. I brought a small mirror with a stand and put it in the bathroom when she was living there. But everyday, we found that the mirror was knocked down. Eventually my husband removed it, thinking that she was fighting with the mirror. But now that I saw in AZWhitefeather's photo how Mikko and Malio enjoy the mirror, I can give it another try.
* By the way, AZWhitefeather, Mikko and Malio look marvelous!

If you have any around, pine needles make great nesting material. I love watching my guys arrange and rearrange them, so that they are just perfect.
Yes, I am sure I can find plenty of them here. Right now, we are having a storm. But I will go out today and collect some twigs and pine needles if the storm eases a bit.

Thank you for the tip. Let me see if I can find something like that around here.
* Thank you. We have two very large pine trees in our front yard. Seems a bit unusual as we live pretty much in desert climate. But they certainly have become very beneficial for the pijjies. Be sure you set out any that may be even a little wet, so they can dry completely before giving them to Kader.

| * The cage looks great, Ghanima! I also think a brick would be a very good idea. In the evening, mine like a little privacy in their dwellings. Piper and Hercules, for example, have curtains over their nest, and Sammy and Pippin have a four-poster nest: It might be an idea to drape a towel or similar over one end, to see if she likes the sheltered corner... * Sorry, I should have explained the reason for all the laughter... It was this: - Quote :
- Well, if I put peanuts in there I am afraid my husband may go into the cage instead of our rescue . But I'll give it a try, too.
Many thanks for the advise.
LOL. I know what you mean. I actually have to do it when mine isn't looking, but Scooter is. Then you also tell your hubby that if he goes after them, he sleeps in the cage.

| Here is a few more ideas: The first picture is a pair of our dovies( Noah and Noelle) but I sure do love this basket and wish I could find a few more. What I like about it is, that their tails are able to be just at the right height and they don't get all ratty from hitting the sides of their nest. This is Phoenix's shelf below, but he loves this, I know carpets aren't ideal, but we have many that get switched out and it gives him some footing. It is plywood with holes drilled in the 3 corners and then ziptied to the cage side. This is A shelf idea below.... it is one of those wire under the sink organizers. I just flipped it upside down and zip tied it to the side of the cage. Don then cut a piece of Plywood and then I used sticky tiles on top of it. SO it slides right in for the shelf. OR... ((AND Please excuse the mess on top of his cage, tis' just the food caterer's serving tray LOL) BUT--Depending on how much room in the cage you have this is Journey's cage ( Our king) And I used an organizer shelf unit for closets and zipped tied that to the side of the cage. And then Plywood and sticky tiles as the actual shelf. Anyways... I know when we were just setting up a cage it was great to see all the ideas...Imagination is endless LOL! Hope this helps a tiny bit. | |

| Dear All, I am so sorry that I did't reply to your posts for some time. For some reason I didn't get anything on my mailbox saying that there are new posts in the thread. Maybe I accidentally hit one of these links which make you cease watching the topic, I am not really sure. My deepest apologies to all who posted during this time. Also, we were occupied with house repairs because a recent storm did some damage to our house (and many other houses in our island). Now all is well, except that almost everybody caught cold, including me Dear AZJourney and All, Thank you very very much for sending me all these ideas. Since I just saw your posts today, I was trying to come with something of my own in the mean time. But Kader didn't set foot on any one of my ideas of a nest. Of course, after seeing your nests, now I realize that my ideas were quite poor. I am posting the pictures of (some of) what I did. I basically filled a box with towels and thought that it will do OK for a nest. I also cut two sides of a larger box and installed it around the nest to give her some private area as shown in the first picture. But she was not interested. Later removed the larger box as seen in the second picture but she didn't like it that way, either. She always prefers the wooden surface which is next to the nest. I also collected some twigs and pine needles as shown in the second picture. She played a little with them trying to break them into smaller pieces. But she didn't use them on the nest. However, she "loved" the mirror. Since the mirror is installed she doesn't go out of her cage although her door is always open when we are home. I actually have to force her out when I am to clean the cage. Dear Teresa, Thank you very much for taking the pictures of Piper's curtains. Now I better understand what you mean. It is much better than putting a large box inside the cage. I don't know why couldn't think of it! Also thank you for sending me the link to the other thread. It is full of very good ideas! I repeat my apology and send very best wishes to all. | |

| Hi Ghanima, I'm sorry about the storm damage you and some of your neighbor experienced. I'm glad that all is well now though. That's a cute picture of Kader checking out the mirror. Just the fact that interest has been shown, I'm guessing she might be 'he'. Usually females don't pay much attention to a mirror. At least mine don't. In fact, they don't even look at it. With regard to the nesting materials, you might try putting a few of the pine needles ' in' the basket and then let Kader put the rest in, if so desired. Please keep us posted on how things are coming along. | |

I'm sorry you weren't being given notification of new posts. At the bottom of your thread on the right side, it should read: Stop watching this topic. If it says, Start watching this topic, click on that and you should start receiving notification of new posts. Le me know if you continue to have problems.

Oh my! If she is a he, that would be big surprise to us. I was thinking that Kader is female because I noted that some of the males were courting her when I let her to balcony. But perhaps I was mistaken. I have also noticed recently (since last few days) that Kader is making a sound from his/her chest! I thought that only males make that noise but after hearing "her" I thought, "oh maybe sometimes females do it, too." What do you think? - AZWhitefeather wrote:

Well, it says "stop watching." In any case, I got the notification mail after your last post. So, it is back to normal, now. Maybe the problem was that I accidentally deleted one of the notification mails (or maybe it went to junk section) so I didn't get any further notices until I visited the topic. Who knows? Thank you for your posts and best wishes.

Thank you for your posts and best wishes. Females do it too only a little different than the males. Some females will notice the mirror, and even look into it. but the males will bow and dance and show off in front of it.

| Hi Ghanima, I'm sorry to hear of the storm damage and that everybody got colds because of the bad weather. I hope things are back to normal now. Even today, a friend who moved to Greece was saying it was snowing there!! She was saying she'd moved to Greece for the sun, and asking who to contact to get her money back. Getting accessories for pigeons is a bit of an adventure... little by little we get to know their preferences, and even with good advice it sometimes takes trial and error to meet the aspirations of an individual pigeon! It's brilliant that you tried several ideas to see what Kader liked best. But if she isn't in the mood for nesting yet, the podium will get her vote every time! As for the mirror, maybe she's a girl who likes to look at her reflection, but none of my girls ever showed any interest in mirrors, so... | |

Thank you for the info. Kader notices and looks into the mirror but she doesn't show off in front of it. This is relief for me because I am so much used to calling her with female names like "my little lady" and such. "Kader" is also strictly female name in Turkish :) Actually I have a theory as to why she shows interest to mirror. Her injured eye reacts to light as confirmed by the vet. But I don't think that she has vision in this eye. Because as she walks in the house I notice that she keeps bumping to things which are on the side of the injured eye. Perhaps she shows interest to mirror not because she looks at her reflection but because it is shiny so that it gives some stimulus to this eye. It is just a theory, though. - Teresa wrote:

Getting accessories for pigeons is a bit of an adventure... Well, as of today the weather is sunny again. We can now go to the larger island for shopping and I am planning to buy a proper basket for my little lady. Something that she might love. I'll send you more pictures. Best Wishes

| Dear Cindy,
I had to cancel the trip because of the earthquake in Japan. I lived in Tokyo before I moved to Istanbul and I have many Japanese friends. So far I was able to contact all of them except two. Those I contacted are alright except that one of them cannot locate his father in law who was living in Sendai area. It is so sad what happened. Sendai was such a nice city.
Best Wishes. | |

| I hope your friends are okay, as well as the gentleman in the Sendai area. The news coverage of the disaster leaves you numb with horror and disbelief. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families, and also with the survivors, who have such a huge rebuilding task facing them. | |

This earthquake has been such a tragic event. I am glad you have been in contact with your friends and that they are OK, Ghanima. Chuck and I will be thinking, and sending your way, special thoughts that you receive positive news about your two friends and your friend's father-in-law.
