| I have tried so many different feeders for my birds. I'm always switching to something else. Either they can poop in it, or a couple of them hog the feeder, or they climb in or throw the seed too easily all over the place. I hate wasting feed, as it is getting more and more expensive. I bought a new feeder to try, but of course, they won't go near it until they get used to seeing it. I figure by the end of the day, they'll be hungry enough to give it a try. A few of them have gone to it, so we'll see. I thought maybe, because it is a bit higher on the sides, that maybe they wouldn't be able to throw the feed out as easily, and they can't perch on it. Although a couple have bumped their heads on the top bar thingy. If that continues, than I'll probably switch it out for a smaller wooden dowel. What do you guys feed your birds from? I have seen those plastic boxes with holes cut out, but I don't like them, and don't think my birds would like them. I know it's probably crazy, but I always worry that they'll scrape their eyes when they put their heads through the holes. I don't know. I have bought so many, but can't seem to settle on one. Any suggestions? This is the newest feeder. | |

| I've thought about using a tray, like what you've posted, but now that the guys are outside I don't think I can because there are occasional ants that come by and cart off a seed or two that was flipped out of the dishes. If I used the tray, I'm afraid that would be an open invitation for a gazillion ants to visit the patio. It's bad enough that we have a ton of them in the grass. I use the little cups that hang on the wire. Each nesting area has two each, seed, grit and water dishes. It works great for my guys. | |

| Well - I had the same thoughts about all this yet I have the advantage that I don't have to feed many birds at the same time. Also "my" birds are on the balcony not in the loft. I came up with a quite silly solution but then I am a - right? Accidently I have added a new post on my pigeon blog today which is showing what I do regarding feeding issues - please check Pigeon TalesI can only say that "my" birdies love these little pots because they can stick their little heads deep into it and still do not damage their plumage. They can really dig into the food to look for their favourite seeds and still hardly spill anything if the hole is not too big. It looks very funny. I have put stones into the sock as well so that they cannot knock them over. even when they climb on it. Even Pete, our patriarch, with his impressive figure - a really big pigeon - hasn't succeeded so far in knocking this over. But this idea is applicable for a small number of pigeons only of course. I simply had to find something to avoid their jealousy fights and this was it! | |

| pigeonwriter, those footie things are soooo cute. How'd you ever think of that? They look so cute all lined up eating from their little bowls.
Cindy, that's a great way of doing it what with being outside and all. I had forgotten about the ant problem that one would encounter outdoors. Guess every situation is totally different. You have to use your imagination.

I was even thinking about putting a nice 'salad' out for them, after seeing Charis' and yours, to see if they would go for it, and then came to my senses and thought that really wouldn't be a good idea.

I think it would be an excellent idea. They'd love it! Just put it in a tray, so it wouldn't be all over. Most of it remains in the tray. And when I chop the greens, they don't throw them around as much. I also chop the carrots into very small pieces, in my chopper, rather than shredding. They love them. Oh, and bean sprouts, chopped. If you ever do put out a salad for them, we want to see pictures.

| Thanks Jenaka. The sides of the feeder are low. Do they throw the seed around much? Very pretty birds you have. How many do you have? | |

Nope! Not for me. There is a red x and when I click on that a website comes up but there's no picture of a bird feeder.

They can't really throw the seed around because the wire is in the way. I might find 6 or 8 seeds laying around that they just drop but that's it. I have 18 birds currently. The 2 big dark colored birds in the picture were homers lost after a race who were not wanted back by their owners. The cream bird I'm not sure what breed he is but he's a tiny guy.

| That's weird. That happens to me on PT sometimes. Don't know why. Everyone will be talking about the great shot, and all I can see is an X. Wonder why. | |
