An angelic pigeon visited my friend's balcony today. She regularly feeds the colony of pigeons that stay in her apartment and was pretty surprised to find this as the rest are mostly the ash coloured rock pigeons. This one is white and seems to be a new member. But the poor thing was constantly getting shooed away by the other pijjies :( Hope she gets accepted by them soon and finds a mate. It also seemed to be badly infested with nasty pigeon flies...my friend noticed around 6-8 of them hiding in her feathers :( Since this is a feral bird, is there any alternative way to treat the fleas other than dusting the powder on them? As it would be difficult to catch it.
She managed to click some snaps of her. Isn't she beautiful? I loved her eyes...angelic

Is she a smaller bird? The reason I ask is because she looks like a young roller to me. If she is lost from someone's loft, she may be tamer than the others and you could catch her and dust her. Since she is looking for food...offer her some to see if you can gain her trust. She is gorgeous.

My friend told me that she seemed tamer than the rest. As in she didn't fly off the moment she saw humans...but the moment my friend went close, she flew away. But she came back on seeing the food after my friend backed off. Will tell her to keep offering food and gain her trust so that we can catch her. She is one lovely pijjie

Jen made a very good trap. I'll go find the link for you.

but I seem to recall that there was a picture somewhere of a homemade trap. Basically this is what you do...you get a box and prop it on one end with a tall stick...to the stick you tie a string...on the ground under the box you put the food and then wait and watch. When the pigeons you want goes there to eat, you pull the string. Now, you will need to be prepared to safely get the pigeon out of the trap without the pigeon escaping.

For Pete's sake, I know I posted in this thread, but it's nowhere to be found. :WHAT?:
Let's see if I can remember what I had said . . . :Rolling eyes: She is quite a little beauty.
Might be she's being shunned because she's new to the flock. Pigeons can also detect when one of the flock isn't up to par. This could be a consideration, given the fly infestation.
I can't think of an alternative to treating the flies other than to catch her a get her dusted. If they can be seen from a distance, then she definitely needs to be treated ASAP.
I would try to befriend her and then hopefully the opportunity will arise where you can grab her and get her taken care of.
Please keep us posted.

Better yet, Charis' of using the trap would probably work better.

Thanks so much guys for helping me with the trap. I spoke to my friend yesterday and she told me that the pijjie was really tame. She offered her some peas and the pijjie came and ate out of her hands My friend was thrilled to bits as this was the first time in her life she had a bird eating out of her hand lol
But that's a good sign...so I told her to check if she can catch it without the trap. If it doesn't work out...then I'll make the trap according to the way you guys mentioned and have her caught and treated. Will keep you all posted.

That's lovely
Her angel just cannot resist a bite to eat, even if she did hesitate at first. Hope your friend can catch her - if an attempt fails, they can be quite wary.

She really does seem tame.
 That's a tricky spot to try and catch her. One thing I would suggest is for your friend to make sure the timing is perfect.
If she tries and misses, there's a good chance the trust will be broken and she'll never be caught.
Is there any chance of luring her inside?
Sending positive thoughts that all goes well. Please keep us posted.

I agree with Cindy that luring her inside would be a good plan too. What about moving the food closer and closer to the door and after a few days leaving the door open with the food and water just inside the door? She looks young.

Yep quite a tricky place. She stays on the 3rd floor of an apartment and what we see in the video is the window ledge outside the room. Yeah I guess luring the pigeon inside the room like what Cindy and Charis suggested would be a good idea. But hope she trusts enough to come in...it sure is going to take a lot of patience and time...need to catch it as soon as possible as the flies seem pretty bad :( Will ask my friend to keep moving the food closer to the window and eventually inside the room and see how it goes.
Will keep you all updated

She's a beautiful little bird. I'll bet you can lure her in that way.

@Capuccino: heh true she does seem to be wary but definitely not able to resist the food offered. Hope to catch her without her trust getting broken

She's a beauty! Over here it's been pigeon-flytastic for a couple of weeks too. I've actually managed to put Ivermectin on the back of the necks of some of them by delivering it through a very long, transparent pipette that sneaks up behind them while they're eating! They didn't find that a threat; at most, they walked away, but not for long!
