Question about Amoxicillin Empty

Treatment:
Antibiotics are indicated with Baytril, Amoxicillin or Sulfas being commonly recommended. One needs to consider what is or might be the primary disease.
Note: Amoxicillin is my first choice of antibiotics when "shooting from the hip". It is gentle on the pigeon and is the least expensive of the good antibiotics. Use 3 Grams per gallon for about 7 days.

Hi plamenh & everyone!

Thanks for all the really helpful information!
I hope it's okay if I post my question here (if not, maybe someone can move my post).
I'm currently in the process of building a 'first-aid' kit for emergencies... I already found an online source for Baytril (thanks, Charis!) and now I'm wondering about Amoxicillin.
So far I've found it in tablet form as well as powdered form. It sounds like you use the powdered form.

But there are also different amounts: 40g & 2.5g on this site:
http://www.jedds.com/Categories.bok
and it doesn't say how much on this site: http://www.foyspigeonsupplies.com/catalog/593-1311.html
Plus, there's also something called "Tylamox" a combo of 20mg Tylan & 10mg Amox: http://www.foyspigeonsupplies.com/catalog/1365.html

confused

So, do you guys have a preferred brand or amount? I'm kinda leaning towards the "Avivet" because it has extra vitamins and the write-up sounds good... but of course I've never used it before and I could be picking the wrong one! I have NO idea
I wanted to find out what you prefer since you mentioned it in your posts. Any thoughts?

Here's a link to a thread about what to have in your First Aid Kit.

https://pij-n-angels.forumotion.net/pigeon-and-dove-illness-and-injury-discussion-forum-f21/first-aid-kit-t408.htm

If you start with the baytril, you can always add amoxicillin later as you build your First Aid kt.

Question about Amoxicillin Empty

Amoxicillin is a broad spectrum antibiotic. Usually used against Salmonella, E. coli, Strep. & Staph. type of bacteria. It is much safer than Baytril or Doxycicline.
Doseage : 50 mg per pigeon per day in divided doses (25 mg twice a day). Treatment is for 5-10 days.
Together with Tylan works good for raspiratory infections (you may need to double the dose in case of Tylamox)

Okay, sounds good! I was thinking the same thing, too ... you know what they say about great minds. Wink

The first link took me to Appertex at Jedd's. Appertex is for coccidia and that would be a good medicine to buy.
I wouldn't buy the others as there isn't enough amoxicillin in them for a cure.

This may be for fish but that doesn't mater it's the same product and you can cut the pills into the correct doses or make an oral suspension.

Thanks, Charis!

Weird-- I just tried the first link and it didn't take me to the right place either! But it worked that first day. Oh well.

Try this link: http://www.jedds.com/-strse-Medicine-%3E%3E-e.Coli-fdsh-Paratyphoid-cln-Amoxicillin%2C-powder/Categories.bok for the Powder form -- this is where they have the "Avivet" I was talking about.

and this one: http://www.jedds.com/-strse-Medicine-%3E%3E-e.Coli-fdsh-Paratyphoid-cln-Amoxicillin%2C-tablets/Categories.bok for the Tablets. They have the "fish mox" here as well.

Question about Amoxicillin Empty
PostSubject: Re: Question about Amoxicillin   Question about Amoxicillin Icon_minitimeThu Dec 03, 2009 3:27 pm

Can you get Synulox tablets 50mg? I find them really convenient, as they have amoxicillin and clavulanic acid (which maximises the absorption of the amoxicillin by the body), and it's easy to dose, i.e. half a tablet per adult pigeon twice a day.
Pigeons don't like the taste, though, so I've been putting the half tablet inside a grain of thawed corn: it can't be seen or smelled, so less fighting from the patients, it slides down more easily, and they barely taste it.
You can also mix the appropriate amount with water, but you have to keep agitating it, as it settles very quickly. This way the pigeons do taste it, and older, more resilient ones soon learn to spit it out...
