Treatment: Antibiotics are indicated with Baytril, Amoxicillin or Sulfas being commonly recommended. One needs to consider what is or might be the primary disease. Note: Amoxicillin is my first choice of antibiotics when "shooting from the hip". It is gentle on the pigeon and is the least expensive of the good antibiotics. Use 3 Grams per gallon for about 7 days. Hi plamenh & everyone! Thanks for all the really helpful information! I hope it's okay if I post my question here (if not, maybe someone can move my post). I'm currently in the process of building a 'first-aid' kit for emergencies... I already found an online source for Baytril (thanks, Charis!) and now I'm wondering about Amoxicillin. So far I've found it in tablet form as well as powdered form. It sounds like you use the powdered form. But there are also different amounts: 40g & 2.5g on this site: http://www.jedds.com/Categories.bokand it doesn't say how much on this site: http://www.foyspigeonsupplies.com/catalog/593-1311.htmlPlus, there's also something called "Tylamox" a combo of 20mg Tylan & 10mg Amox: http://www.foyspigeonsupplies.com/catalog/1365.html So, do you guys have a preferred brand or amount? I'm kinda leaning towards the "Avivet" because it has extra vitamins and the write-up sounds good... but of course I've never used it before and I could be picking the wrong one! I wanted to find out what you prefer since you mentioned it in your posts. Any thoughts?

| Amoxicillin is a broad spectrum antibiotic. Usually used against Salmonella, E. coli, Strep. & Staph. type of bacteria. It is much safer than Baytril or Doxycicline. Doseage : 50 mg per pigeon per day in divided doses (25 mg twice a day). Treatment is for 5-10 days. Together with Tylan works good for raspiratory infections (you may need to double the dose in case of Tylamox) | |

Hi Joyful pigeon, It was fine to post in the other thread, but I did go ahead and move your post and subsequent posts pertaining to your question to start a new thread as I didn't want it to get lost in the midst of the other thread. Okay, sounds good! I was thinking the same thing, too ... you know what they say about great minds. Plamenh: thank you for the info about amoxicillin.

Appertex is for coccidia and that would be a good medicine to buy. I wouldn't buy the others as there isn't enough amoxicillin in them for a cure.

| Can you get Synulox tablets 50mg? I find them really convenient, as they have amoxicillin and clavulanic acid (which maximises the absorption of the amoxicillin by the body), and it's easy to dose, i.e. half a tablet per adult pigeon twice a day. Pigeons don't like the taste, though, so I've been putting the half tablet inside a grain of thawed corn: it can't be seen or smelled, so less fighting from the patients, it slides down more easily, and they barely taste it. You can also mix the appropriate amount with water, but you have to keep agitating it, as it settles very quickly. This way the pigeons do taste it, and older, more resilient ones soon learn to spit it out... :That\\\'s so f | |
