The pij probably has a 'back door' to his hide-a-way.
The guy is going to have quite a time patching up the wall.

When I started watching I thought the vent was outside the house.
I think you are right Cindy that pigeon has a secret entrance! :Yes: Wouldn't surprise me if they had the same problem again should it get cold and the pidgie needs to get warm.
