| You may have noticed last week that kreyes joined us. She is a dear friend and fellow real estate agent here in Portland. While vacationing in Mexico she became involved in the rescue of a baby feral Pigeon. Here is the account one of her friends wrote about the experience. I wanted to share it with you. There are pictures too and I will add them after a while.
The inside poop on one lucky pigeon
Last weekend Karen Reyes, realtor and owner of Calakmul, Susana of Galeria Tanana, and Omar of Monchi’s, were checking the progress of the renovations going on at the former restaurant. One of the men working on the new palapa called their attention to an abandoned baby pigeon he and his co-workers had been caring for. (pigeon1.jpg) The trabajadoro had been giving the pigeon water and bits of tortilla to keep it alive, however it was in sad shape. Omar and Karen couldn’t resist the forlorn little bird. Not knowing where else to go, they decided to take it to the Sayulita Animal clinic, placing it in an old palm frond for the trip. Juanita Tucker, who was on her way to Calakmul, spotted the pair and stopped to see what they were carrying so attentively. “Tuck,” owner of Casa Juanita and a volunteer for Sayulita Animals, told them there was no vet at the clinic so they changed tactics, climbed into her truck, and headed to the veterinary in Centro. None of the three held much hope for their tiny charge, but suddenly the little pigeon started to peep and hop around, defiantly demonstrating that he did indeed, have a strong will to live. “Ahhhhhhh,” said the three in unison. “We shouldn’t let it die.” Without discussion, they decided they were not going to the local vet after all. A veterinary office is not a bird sanctuary, and pigeons are not the typical patients of vets. Karen said she had a friend in Oregon who knew about pigeon rescue. Tuck mentioned that in her sister’s hometown in California, they had a place just for abandoned birds like this. “This is one of God’s little creatures, after all,” she said. All three nodded in agreement. Omar quickly called his sister Kristina, who agreed to foster the helpless infant bird and they drove over to Monchi’s to deliver their package. (pigeon2.jpg) + (pigeon3.jpg) In just a couple of days, with some appropriate bird food and more comfortable living conditions, the pigeon (now named “Norm”) was happily testing his wings under the care of his new “Mom,” Kristina. (pigeon4.jpg) Now that Norm feels safe in his new home, he is becoming quite domesticated. He snuggles with his human caretaker, stretches his wings and is practicing flying. (pigeon5.jpg) What a lucky pigeon! ............................................................ Reminder: Free Spay & Neuter Clinic at Sayulita Animals this weekend & Monday. Bring your cats and dogs for free sterilization to prevent unwanted kittens and puppies. Help make Sayulita safe for all living things. Call 291 3974 for information.

| Lucky little bird. Sometimes it is just being in the right place at the right time. Like I always say............I think The God Lord often sets it up for a certain person to be in the right place at the right time. Someone who has had planted in their heart, the seed of compassion for His little ones. Thanks for sharing this Charis. I'll look forward to the pictures.
Okay, you just posted them while I was typing. I'll go check them out. | |

| You're right Owl. We never know how far our deeds will reach and who will remember what we have shared. I'm not surprised Karen did what she could to help this little bird and I'm thankful she was there at just the right time. Karen told me at the time she told me everyone was uncertain just what kind of a baby bird they were caring for. One thought they had a pelican. Thank goodness she knew. | |
