It's one of those days...

Beattle Bug is acting under the weather and so I bought her inside and put her in a cage in the kitchen. When I took her out this morning to give her medicine, she escaped and I was unable to catch her. It's an impossible task with just 1 person and when it's still light out.

I had an idea. I would bring Sammy inside and give him treats on the counter...maybe he could get her down.


This is how it turned out...



Now I have 2 pigeons out of reach.

Oh no!!!! You need a certain ritual, Charis, something your pijjies chose by themselves. You would laugh out loud when I tell you what I do...

Petra...this would be a good time to tell. I could stand a good laugh.

Okay - well, after Willy had his own way to fly back to his box when we needed to feed him or putting him to bed or for whatever reason we thought this might function with Pina as well. Pijjies love to play - we have realized - and they choose their own games - the difficulty is to understand what they want US to do. Here it is:

when I need to catch Pina - she is normally free the whole day in the appartment - we do following: my hubby starts "chasing" Pina while moving his hand as if he wanted to hush her away. Pina starts to fly through the appartment until she sits on some other place. Again we chase her until she thinks it is enough now - then she flies to my Putri statue and sits down on her head (it's a large wooden sculpture I carved a few years back). this is the signal for us now that I approach Pina with the cover of her box. I hold it upright in front of her until she jumps on it. I then walk with Pina on the cover into the bathroom, close the door half way until it is quite dark (because our little bathroom does not have a window) and now I slowly move my right arm around the bird and I have her under my chin where she cannot escape any more. Believe it or not this ritual always works. Crazy - isn't it?

Sometimes Pina just flies one round through the appartment until she lands on my statue and sometimes she likes to play a bit more. But it is always her who decides when the game is over...

Winnie btw is a completely different case. As she cannot really fly yet but RUN through the appartment I do following: I always get more or less on the same level as she is i.e. when she is on the floor I am kneeling on the floor etc. move my hand very slowly towards her until it is under her belly and then move my hand slowly upwards until she is willing to take a little step and stand on my hand. This way I can move her wherever I want... You see - it is also a kind of small ritual...

Oh dear, Charis! I hope you've managed to get them down by now!
Fortunately I have wooden shutters on the windows, so it's always possible to turn day into night and catch them. (Which really means, catch George, as the others don't run away much!) Would it be possible to hang a blanket or something like that in front of the window?

Sammy has been caught and returned to Romey who was quite thrilled to be relieved of egg duty.

Beattle Bug is totally uncooperative. Poor little girl hasn' had a bit to eat all day.

Poor thing! Hope she does come down to eat soon.

I'm sure she is hungry and thirsty.
I know the situation isn't funny, but I did have to laugh with your statement above.

My Bank is easy. He loves to peck my hand. I let him peck my right hand and my left hand is for him to perch on then I go walk to the cage while he is busy pecking my hand. I wish Piggy was like him.

This post was a riot! I can just get a mental picture of you guys catching your birds. Too funny.

Well...beatle Bug has escaped into the house again. She did the same thing this morning but it was still dark out and so I was able to catch her rather quickly. Now, though, it's the waiting game until it gets dark out side.

When we let Scooter out in the morning, you should see how good she has gotten at evading us! It's great that she has gotten this good at being a normal little pigeon, but it does make it challenging. I can't help it, I have to smile, as we never thought she would be able to get around quite as well as she does. When she gets tired, she just goes back to her cage now. Or if we both leave the room, she gets bored and goes back in. When we come back into the room, out she comes again! LOL. I love it!

Scooter has come a long way, Jay. You should be very proud.

I'm proud of her. She's the one who had the determination to learn and practice and reach the place where she is at. It never ceases to amaze me just what these guys are capable of. Such strong and determined little birds. And so smart. She has won the heart of Hoot, that is for sure.
