Louise I'm sorry if my questions & concerns have gotten you so worried.
Since Dr. Hauck has correctly cared for so many of your pigeons I guess I would do what he thinks is best... But I would stay very observent to how Little Feathered Feet acts, her eating, sleeping, drinking & energy level, if any of these change I would take her back to the vet ASAP. Robin, I was already very concerned way before you voiced your concerns. That is why I asked all the questions while I was with Dr. Hauck. The second he mentioned that "gangrene had set in", dozens of red flags went up, my mind went into all the possible complications. Dr. Hauck was very reassuring that this was localized and I did not have to worry. Knowing him as I do, I really do not think he would put her at risk if he did not think that this was a safe way to proceed. Maybe I am being overly protective, but I am definately watching her like a hawk. I know what to look for. Right now, if it wasn't that her wing was taped and that she is unable to fly, you would think she was a very normal, healty bird. She is eating, drinking, and pooping perfectly. He energy level is always in hyper mode. She is sooooo agile. Believe me, if I see even the slightest change in her, she will be back in his office immediately. I put her taped wing directly up to my nose and there is absolutely no odor whatsoever. I do not want to risk removing the bandage and causing further problems. So, for the time being I will just take an observent approach and trust that Dr. Hauck is doing what is correct. Thank you for all your concern and good wishes. Louise | |

| Thanks for asking Robin. Little Feather Feet is doing great She is eating well, pooping well, is very alert and active. If is wasn't that her wing is taped and that she can't fly you would think she is the picture of a very healthy, normal pigeon.....that is with the exception of the feathered feet whch are more precious than ever. She has put on some weight, mostly in the breast area, but has not grown any larger. She is like a little minature pijjie .......so cute. We return to Dr. Hauck the first week of August/approx. 10/12 days from now for evaluation of the wing. I am still hoping she will not need the amputation.......... I have done quite a bit of research on gangrene. I was surprised to learn that there are two types.....Dry gangrene and Moist gangrene. The moist gangrene is what brings visions of horror to our minds. The dry gangrene is the drying and falling off of dead tissue. It appears that this little one has the dry type and that the treatment that Dr. Hauck has prescribed is 100% appropriate. I'll get some new pictures i the next few days and post them. Louise | |

| Thank you for the update, Louise! I'm so glad Little Feather Feet is doing well, and that you can now be confident that her treatment is right for her. I hope and pray that amputation won't be necessary. Tell her from me she's one brave little lady and give her a kiss! | |

| Its wonderful to read that L.F.Feet is doing so very well. And thank you for educating me on the two different forms of gangrene, I never knew that! I guess if this little girl had to have gangerene she was lucky to get the lesser of the two. I look forward to the photos... when you have time to post them. | |

| Well, a full month has passed since Little Feathered Feet was last seen by Dr. Hauck. I have an appointment at 10:15AM tomorrow morning for a further evaluation of her wing. I am anxious and nervous to see what the wing looks like once the taping is removed. I will be bringing my digital camera with me so we will all be able to see. I am still thinking positive and hoping that amputation will not be necessary. Louise | |

| I'm anxious to hear what Dr. Hauck has to say, Louise. Taking pictures is a great idea. I sure hope he doesn't need to have the wing removed but if he does, in most cases they recover quickly. | |

| Little Feathered Feet will not require surgery. The wing does not need to be amputated The drying process of the dead tissue has progressed exactly as Dr. Hauck had hoped for. This dead portion of the wing is almost ready to fall off on it's own. There is no sign of any infection, so the Cipro has been discontinued. Dr. Hauck feels that the remaining portion of the wing is completely healthy. Although she will be flightles, she will look almost completely normal as she is only loosing the portion of wing which contains the last 5 flight feathers. The wing has been re-wrapped only as a preventative measure as the wing now droops so low that LFF would be tripping on it and could possibly pull it off before it is totally ready to fall off. I shall return to Dr. Hauck in 3 weeks at which time he feels that he will be able to remove the dead portion with nothing more than a slight little tug. No pain will be involved in the final removal. I have taken 4 pictures which I will send to Charis to post. In the first picture, you will see the underside of the wing. The black area is the dead tissue. The group of 5 feathers at the top are the ones that will be falling off. In the second picture, you will see the top portion of the wing. The group of feathers that you see in Dr. Hauck's fingers will be the ones falling off. In the third picture you will all get to see what my Godsend, Dr. Hauck looks like. In the last picture, it is Little Feathered Feet back at home, sporting her new green bandgage. See how chubby she has become. She is now 258grams. All that weight gain went just to her chest.......she is still as small and cute as ever Louise | |

| ...I hope I got the pictures posted in the right order. Great update, Louise. This one has turned out as good as it could. It's strange...but that is very similar to the way I had Dr. Hauck pictured in my mind. | |
