This is Pij'ette. She was presented to me in 2003 with a well established, untreated wing injury.

Although I was very new to this whole rescue/rehab side of life, I could clearly see her wing was injured and she had a 'bump' at the bend of her wing at the injury site. I attributed that to the wing not healing properly, but felt a thorough exam was in order by our local rehabber.

Upon exam, the rehabber began pulling out a few small feathers where the bump was. What I thought was improper healing, was in fact a very nasty abscess. The wound was cleaned and Nolvasan was applied.

Although Pij'ette only has partial use of her wing as a result of the injury going untreated, she is doing wonderfully.

It's so very important to check all the nooks and crannies when examining a rescued bird. That visit to the rehabber taught me there could be very serious, underlying issues that are not visible upon first glance. Whenever possible please seek the services of a rehabber or vet.

Here are a couple photos of Pij'ette.
Today she lives in the aviary with her mate Mikko, daughters Sadie and Sam, 'Son-in-law' Malio and her two grandbirdies, Dolly (Big D) and Dumpling.

I'm still gradually discovering all kinds of good posts from before I joined.
I loved this one -- and the advice, too!
Great job

Cindy and Teresa - thank you for this reminder. Yes it is really essential that you take a close look. Thanks to you guys I have learned to look much more closely - earlier I would not have realized when something is wrong... Embarassed

Great job

I was just telling Charis a couple days ago that I'm going to go through the threads and bump up some them up for the very reason you mentioned, Teresa.

Thank you. I really did learn a lot with Pij'ette's case. Wing Injury 458406
