Omigosh this doesn't sound good Wondering what to do then... probably a mix of both natural and strong remedies (alternated) might be the key? Instead of just resorting to one thing The things these poor birds have to suffer

| Not to stomp on you Petra...but... there is a huge difference between spraying Sevin over a large area of land, seasonally, to control pests and carefully dusting a bird infested with mites and lice once or occasionally to get a mite or lice infestation under control. A huge mite infestation is very damaging to birds as well. The mites suck the blood and the bites itch horribly, which I personally have experienced. The birds are left anemic and listless.
When using Sevin on a bird the directions are to keep the product out of the eyes, nose and mouth which are the same for diatomaceous earth.

I am not saying anything else otherwise I might be stomped again. Okay Petra, at the risk of being called ignorant or sarcastic again by you, which I was being neither. You claim that others are not open to other ideas, but I think it is you who are not open. 5% Sevin dust, or the permethrins dusts work great. They have been used for years by pigeons fanciers with no problems. Your natural remedies do not always work, and at best, can take a long time to work. When you have bugs on a bird, it is important to get rid of them ASAP. You want everyone to go with the natural remedies, and are not open to trying other things. But sometimes, the other things are what is needed. So if you choose not to use them, that is fine, but please drop the crusade about treating birds with anything other than natural remedies. Now, I am not being sarcastic. I am being straight forward. Often times, if the bird is not treated with the modern medicines that work, they will die, and then no one will have to worry about any damage being done to their immune system anyway. And if the bugs on a bird are not gotten rid of, they can debilitate the bird. PRIYA---As Cindy said get under the wings. Especially under the wings, as this is where they like to hide.

http://www.safe2use.com/poisons-pesticides/pesticides/misc/sevin-carbaryl-old.htm Interesting article, and worth bearing in mind. Unfortunately any insecticide carries risks, and these must be weighed out carefully. It also said, towards the end of the article, that a full investigation had been conducted, many of the adverse effects are reversible and the product is still licensed. Personally I will use a tetramethryn/permethryn spray on any mite-infected birds that are not in critical condition. I have a house full of pets, and family, and students, and the risks posed by the medication seem to me much less than the risks of not acting quickly and decisevely. As others have said, each person has to make the best decision they can for their circumstances. At the end of the day, we should respect each other's choices, even the ones we don't agree with. - Quote :

That was uncalled-for, and unfair. Please calm down and read the posts again, and you will see that there was nothing in them that would merit your angry response.

| Let me cool things a bit here and share some funny moments i had yesterday :) Yesterday i had been to Dev's house as i had some work nearby and i wanted to meet all my "exports" as Dev calls them That's because all the pigeons except Parthu were found by me and given to Dev So he has renamed me as the official pigeon exporter in Bangalore. I met Mito and Sia who have grown a lot and are always with each other. Where ever Mito goes, Sia follows :) But they got very nervous seeing a stranger in the house and never came down :( I was surprised to see Tuti (the baby we recently rescued) grow up so much!!! He was such a tiny baby when we saw him, covered with yellow feathers. I expected to see a tiny baby but he had lost all the yellow feathers and the cere had also started to show up!!! I never expected he would grow so fast. It was only 3 weeks back Dev had taken him in. Next in line was Birdie who was very angry that i should enter his house The moment i went near him, he puffed himself up like a balloon and gave me a hard slap much to my disappointment and Dev's happiness :( Dev was obviously very pleased that he was the only one Birdie tolerated. Parthu was in the cage and is a little doll. Poor baby still has a long way to go :( the areas where the pox fell off has holes and he looked very depressed :( But we have to keep him confined for the sake of his health and so that the others don't catch the infection and mites. Birdie always manages to go near his cage and sit besides it and they keep gazing at each other. That's so sweet I loved meeting all the babies Just want that Parthu should recover completely. Dev will be away for a few days and in his absence i hope his room mate will be able to manage. I have asked him to get in touch with me should there be any emergency. Hoping all goes well :) Dev will be getting the spray Charis was suggesting plus the dust. Hopefully with that the mites should get under control and eventually go Jay i'll ask him to dust it under the wings. Not very sure if he can get to buy diatomaceous earth. If not we were thinking if we can use neem leaves. Neem is a very good antiseptic and effective upto an extent in getting rid of these parasites. Doesn't have any side effects. But it may cause bit of a burning sensation on wounds...that's why we are unsure whether to use it or not. We'll probably wait till the wounds dry up more and then see. | |

| Yes Priya, thanks for sharing that with us. My latest rescue had bugs. Just one treatment with the dust was all it took. He's clean of them now. Sounds like you had an interesting visit. | |

| Thanks for the update on your 'exports', Priya! Your official name is very funny, and I could just imagine the scene with Birdie! I hope everything will go smoothly while Dev is away, and all the babies continue to amaze you with how much they've grown! | |
