| If you're not sure about the Spartrix getting through, you can dissolve one in a small amount of water (just enough to get it dissolved) and administer it with a eyedropper or small syringe along the inside of his beak. Just a thought. Good luck with your exams. | |

| I don't think Spartrix is near as effective as Metronidazole. I have had canker that Spartrix wouldn't touch, but the Metronidazole cured. | |

They probably aren't warm enough, Dev. The reason I use a heating pad is because it provides constant heat. Hot water bottles and heated sock with rice, cool quickly and so the constant temperature is not maintained. If a bird isn't warm enough, everything slows down and the bird is unable to process the food. The food can become sour and bacteria can set in. When that happens, applesauce, or apple juice or even apple cider vinegar can help get the crop moving again, if the bird is kept warm enough. I am going to change the hot water bag right now In India, electrical power cuts are very often which is why I thought these hot water bag would be a better choice I do not have the electrical pad right now, so I will keep replacing the hot water bag frequently until then.

Yeah, even I have seen few instances where Metronidazole was suggested over Spartrix, I will see how the bird is reacting and change the medication tonight if there is not improvement. Thank you very much for your care

- Hi all,
While Dev is away at his exam, though of doing some search on baby foods and got this link:
http://www.nestlebaby.com/sg/baby_nutrition/products/product_search.htm?stage=-1&r=443&num=10
Do you think the first one...Gerber Applesauce can be given? Does this form a substitute to baby applesauce to be given to help digest food in the crop? Will ask Dev to check if this is available in the supermarkets here.
Apart from that i also found this:
http://www.nestlebaby.com/sg/baby_nutrition/products/product_detail.htm?stage=-1&r=293&num=10&pci=0
Cerelac Rice. It says it doesn't have any milk solids.
The rest are a mixture of fruits and veggies with cereals, with milk etc. So i guess these 2 would be the best bet?
Will be asking Dev to be on the look out for these two when he returns. Praying the baby makes it :(
Hi Priya. Gerber Applesauce IS baby applesauce. Gerber makes baby food. The Cerelac Rice contains milk. Milk is not good for pigeons. If you look on the can, or read the ingredients, it says it contains milk. Are there any that don't?

| Thanks Jay.
Phew after hours of searching finally managed to zero in on one baby shop in Bangalore that sold Gerber applesauce. None of the other baby stores had apple sauce available. This shop too had only 2 bottles and Dev picked them up.
Meanwhile the baby continues to be the same. Food given in the morning is still sitting in the crop undigested :( Dev will return home and warm up the applesauce and water and feed it. Hope that helps in the crop to empty.

| Finally got applesauce and have fed Anathu. Since morning, his crop has gone down a bit. He is still the same I am hoping that he gets better. I am changing the hot water bag frequently. Also, we got Baby cereal without milk. Managed to feed Paarthu with it. He seems to be showing sings of improvements. | |

I'm glad there is an improvement.I know that caring for two very ill pigeons is a stretch for you right now with everything else you are doing. You are doing oog though. Please don't feed Anathu any more until the crop empties. You can massage the crop very gently as often as you can, which will help get things moving and break up any particles that are stuck together. It would be very good to mix applesauce in with the cereal you are feeding the other baby too.

| Sure Charis, I will not feed anything solid until his crop becomes completely empty. I have been massaging his crop, I will continue that.
I will add applesause with cereal for Paarthu.

| I am sorry to say but Ananthu has passed away this morning Poor baby was holding his life over the night, morning I took him in hand and gave him some warm water and after few minutes he passed in my hand I am really not able to take this. I just don't understand what was his fate to suffer so much in his short life. I do not think he would have had any peaceful day in his life. | |

| I'm so sorry Dev. You tried so hard to save him. I think it was just too late by the time he came in your care. I wish I had words that could make the pain of what your are feeling go away. I do understand how you feel/ | |

| I'm so sorry, Dev! It's so heartbreaking to see a little one lose his fight for life, even after you've done absolutely everything in your power to help him... The poor baby was already too ill when he came to you. Now you are in pain, but Ananthu isn't any more, so I hope it will lessen your heartache to think of him flying free, and taking with him his last memories: of being loved, cared for and tended by a dear and dedicated friend. Best wishes for little Parthu. | |

| Thanks everyone for your words. We are still not able to forget poor Ananthu Hope his soul rests in peace. Parthu is doing better. He is little more active. Food intake is good. I keep handfeeding soaked peas & applesauce + water + baby cereal rice mix. His three days Spartix was over. I do not see any changes in his pox, except this it has dried a bit. Should we start with any other medicine? His poops are light greenish, slightly watery and white particles. | |

| One of the things that may help dry out the pox is to swab the leisions lightly with iodine, being careful not to get it into the eyes. It's going to take a while though for the pox to go away. Keep doing what you are doing because it is working. Any change, let us know. Also...could you post a picture of the poop?
