| I'm so glad Abby is doing so well. I sure hope your sister-in-law will take heed to your suggestions and NOT let the parent canaries hatch anymore eggs. | |

| Teresa so glad that you were able to at least take away the fertile egg Even just taking away that one egg gives the parents abit of a break & stops a baby canary from suffering. | |

| Another squeaker with canker -- very ill. I saw her land on my window box yesterday, just before feral feeding time. All I had to do was lean out of the window and grab her. She wasn't very thin, but she was clearly very ill: ruffled, hunched up, eyes closing often, letting herself be picked up, falling over when trying to walk, uncoordinated. There was no evidence of canker in her mouth, but there were missing feathers on the front of her neck, and I could feel a small lump at the base of her aesophagus, and two more in the crop. I can feel the obstruction when I'm tube feeding her, and I have to be ever so careful. I started Dr. Hauck's method straight away, but not having papaya juice I improvised with apple sauce with the tiniest drop of ACV. There's no doubt she's critical, and I'm surprised she made it this far. Every time I check up on her it's with a heavy heart, expecting the worst but hoping for the best. I'll keep on fighting for her, but my heart tells me she's not long for this world. If that's the case, she will at least be able to pass away with care, love and dignity. This is the only photo where she's got her eyes open. I've called her Bonnie. | |

| She's soldering on. I hope the treatment is still in time. It's so sad when they're so small and so poorly... | |

| Do I dare to hope? She's no worse, in fact she's more alert and at the last feed I could no longer feel the lump at the base of her aesophagus. I know it's not blocking the crop, as the food went in allright (I was holding my breath), but the next worry is that food may be retained in the crop itself. Fingers crossed! Bonnie, an hour ago, trying to wriggle her wing out of the towel: | |

| Bonnie is stable, and she's now settled in her nest for the night. She's having 5 meals a day of 12-13 ml each (including formula, apple sauce and live yoghurt), and her nest is a lined shoe box with a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel. She's more alert and aware of her surroundings, but her lack of physical coordination is very worrying, and her poops leave much to be desired. At least she doesn't seem to be retaining solids or liquids in her crop, and the urates aren't quite as yellow as they were before. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers, they're much appreciated. On a lighter note, George is now courting Abby, who's moved in next door to him on the veranda. I was hoping they would enjoy each other's company, and... well, she looks interested! It's 2.30 am and the music outside is so loud I can hear all the lyrics! And the volume will carry on increasing for the next 3 hours... I'm supposed to be finishing some translation work, but I can't concentrate, so I'm gonna try to get 5 hours' sleep and work on it in the morning, before work. Roll on, September! | |

| That noise you have to put up with, would drive me insane.
I'm glad Bonnie is stable.
I've been meaning to ask...do you have heating pads in Europe? I've never heard anyone in any other part of the world, except the US and Canada say they have access to them.

Not really, just those bags you microwave -- not very effective, and smelly to boot. We do have this: ,some electric kind of mat to keep feet warm in winter, and I sometimes use one of those, with a slatty frame above it, to prevent direct contact, and put the cage on top of that frame. But they produce too much heat for this time of year, and have a nasty habit of charring any wooden surface on which they stand. I last used it for Xi-ri, placing the 'mat' on a stand, and lining his nest with loads of towels:

| I'm so glad to hear Bonnie is holding her own, Teresa. Do you think ear plugs would help to keep the noise out of your head? Man or man, that would drive me nuts. | |

| Bonnie has taken a turn for the worse. Her crop keeps filling with fluid and she's been sick twice already today. The second time, she had regurgitated food (formula+apple sauce) in her nostrils, and I'm very worried that she may have aspirated some. Her last meal was only 6 ml dilute apple sauce, and I don't think she's keeping the meds down, the way her nest is all wet every 2 hours. She's very hot, and given her lack of coordination I worry that there may be a virus involved too. Poor Bonnie! I'm resuming work in a moment, but I'm keeping her close to me. | |

| I'm so sorry to hear this, Teresa. Keep her as warm as possible and try feeding only very small amounts. This is one of the worst years for canker, I can remember. It breaks my heart. | |
