PostSubject: A Beauty on our Balcony   A Beauty on our Balcony Icon_minitimeSat Sep 12, 2009 6:11 am

Since a couple of weeks we have a regular new visitor on our balcony, a young lady with an incredibly plumage. I wanted to share a few photos. We called her "Copper". You cannot imagine how these feathers glow in the sun while I had photographed her on a dull day...

She is stunning, Petra.
With the sun shining down, I'll bet she's a real sight to behold while in flight. A Beauty on our Balcony 458406
She sure is a plump little pijjie!! Has she been dining at your place? A Beauty on our Balcony 164371 A Beauty on our Balcony 164371

We had an adult, as well as a youngster, with incredible copper coloring (or at least that's what I called it). The adult is featured in my slide show.

ROTFL ROTFL ROTFL Oh yes, Cindy, she's definitely "dining" at our place - I take care that the foodie pots are well filled. Can you imagine that they all gobbled 25 kg seeds in 2 1/2 months? I could not believe this myself and we call only 9 pijjies "our own" i.e. the ones which really belong to "our" family - all the others are visitors... Holy Sheep!! - this also means a lot of crazy I have to clean off the balcony each day Heaven help me Heaven help me Heaven help me
but as you know - I love our feathered friends... Circle of Love Circle of Love Circle of Love

Embarassed Charis - her name is Copper - but maybe we should have called her Beauty - although we have quite a few very pretty birds here. I try to catch them on photo whenever I get a good shot as well when I am outdoors, cycling around the neighbourhood with the camera.
Those results are on my other blog In Terms of Colour with hundreds of blossoms photos and other colour related objects, scenes....

I think Copper is a great name, there will be many more pigeons that qualify for the name Beauty, but not that many Coppers. Copper is really striking and so are your photos!

I wonder where she came from and what genetic mix produced her colours?

That's a very interesting question I have asked myself already. If I find some time I will check the site of Frank Mosca - Pigeon Genetics again - maybe I'll find the answer there. Do you happen to know this website?

No, I don't know it. I just followed your link and looked up recessive red as it is a term I recognise, but I found the explanation difficult to understand because my ignorance of the subject is profound. I would like to know more, to be able to look at our pigeons and know what their parents wer likely to have been.

Yeah - it is quite complicated and one needs time to read into this - but I find it very interesting! :study:
