HERCULES'S LEG BONE HAS KNITTED!


It's not a 100% success story, because even the hefty external structure couldn't prevent a slight rotation of the leg below the break, but the leg can definitely be saved, and there's a very good chance he will be able to use it fully -- when he gets used to the angle of it.

The vet said the external pins can be removed in about 10 days' time. If at the time the larger pin inserted in the hollow bone prevents the articulations from moving freely (looking at the X-ray I would say it will), it will be removed as well, providing the bone growth is completed.

No wonder you are celebrating. That is terrific news! What a perfect Christmas gift for Hercules and you.

This is the best news ever, Teresa. I can only imagine how thrilled you must be. Bless you both for all you have gone through.

Hercules is going back to the vet's in 12 hour's time for another X-ray. If everything is okay, he'll be coming home later in the day without the metal pins.

Thinking the most positive thoughts ever that the X-ray provides a good report for Hercules.

What a pigeon!

The X-ray was good, so the external structure has come off. They've only left the pin inside his leg bone, and if all goes well that one is coming off next month!


He's been a bit quiet tonight, a bit woozy from the anaesthesia, but he ate and drank well, and he's preening at the moment.
He hasn't tried to put any weight on that leg yet, but it's early days. He has now spent so many weeks unable to use that leg, that perhaps he doesn't realise he's got more freedom of movement now. But he's done really well so far, and I'm sure his fighting spirit will see him through.

I am thrilled to pieces on Hercules' update, Teresa.

Hercules is such a tuff little guy. He's been through so much, and he just keeps getting better and better. I'm sure as soon as he realizes he can use that other leg, you're going to have a hard time keeping up with him.

I'll need the scooter, a spare pair of arms, two pairs of falconer's gloves, full body armour and a biker's helmet, (Now that would be a sight to behold! ) as every time he goes to the vet's he comes back more aggressive. Today was no exception! :eek:
