Horrible fracture (Beware, GRAPHIC) -- what can I do?

He's still got a dressing, which is to be changed every 2 days (I took the photo at changing time today). I'm to take him back this Saturday to see if the dressing can come off, and a week later he's to have another X-ray to see if the bone is mending. Only when the bone has knitted can the pins be taken out. Still a way off, poor Hercules! He looks so uncomfortable!

I always look at the eyes, as they tell a lot. Hercules' eyes look pretty perky actually.
I'm sure the excellent care and TLC he's being given helps to compensate for the uncomfortableness of it all.

Teresa...how is Hercules doing tonight?

Teresa, wishing you and Hercules all the best. It is just incredible through what you are going right now too. This little pigeon is truly a hero, not giving up and trying his best to get healthy again. All that sorrow and worry must have a happy end. Oh - I cannot express how much I feel with you

He's hanging on in there, quite defensive, but not quite as vicious with me. I think he's generally calmed down being home, but every time I open the door you should see his pupils dilate! I think he's scared, but shows it through aggression.
The wattles are pinkier than grey now, but since the second operation he's occasionally sneezed, and earlier on today there was a slight whistle when he breathed out. I'd actually asked the vet about it, as I was concerned it might be infectious catarrh, but he waved it off with 'Let's treat first things first'.


Charis, I just saw your message about Nystatin. I do have some in the house, just in case, but these antifungals are a bit scary and I'd hesitate to use them unless a fungal infection was confirmed. I'll ask the vet again on saturday. What do you think?

I'm glad to hear Hercules is doing as good as can be expected.
He has been through a lot and is such a little trooper.

He's so much better!

His leg is looking great -- no sign of infection and not a single blood spot for 4 days now, so the dressing came out today. He's much more comfortable without the bulky thing.
His appetite is very good and he's very feisty, but less violent. He's also in fine voice! And, wonder of wonders, while I was cleaning his foot I saw him move one of his toes!

I thought that as well! (Don't tell the vet, but I interrupted his everlasting antibiotic regimen for 2 days so he could have a probiotic.)
I'm so thrilled with his progress! He never ceases to amaze me!

How is his leg coming along, Teresa? Has he tried to put any weight on it yet?

No, he hasn't, and that worries me, because it suggests that the bone hasn't set yet. But the whole construction is very bulky, pushing against his body, and I wonder whether he could hold the leg vertical at all. He's due for another X-ray very soon, so we'll know then. Fingers crossed!
On the plus side, the leg is a great colour, the feathers are growing back on it, and sensitivity has, at least in part, returned to his foot.

The wing slaps are good. When is the X-ray, Teresa?

Got the fingers crossed and positive thoughts in action.

Given the extent of the injury and the surgeries, I'm sure it's going to take a while for all the heal.
Having good circulation and sensitivity in his foot are great signs.

Lawrence meets his match:

Lawrence just stuck his nose right up against the door of Hercules's basket, but before I could grab him to pull him away, Hercules wingslapped the door really hard and Lawrence jumped two feet back, licking the tip of his nose!
That taught him!...

Oh my goodness, I can just imagine the surprise Lawrence got.
A couple times when Reese has been startled not only does he jump a couple feet back, he also jumps a couple feet straight up.
