| Hercules is still hospitalised, poor thing, and both Piper and I miss him lots. I hope there will be good news tomorrow. | |

| I've just spoken to the vet, and he said Hercules is doing well. Although mobility and sensitivity in the part of the leg below the fracture are minimal, the flesh and skin have regained a good, healthy colour, and are healing well. This means that amputation is no longer needed. The stitches are due to come out on Saturday, so they're going to keep him there until then and he should have the stitches removed before he comes home. In the long term, the idea is to remove the external leg support when (I refuse to accept 'if') the bone sets, and after that physio and rehab to try to get as much movement back as possible. By now Hercules has successfully managed to peck (hard!) everyone who had to handle him... :That\\\'s so f But then again, I didn't call him Hercules for nothing! | |

I have to say I've got one of those slings in the first picture and it's the most difficult thing to put together. Definitely a two person job. Teresa I seem to have missed a lot of this thread and didn't realise how much Hercules had been going through since the op. Thank goodness he's showing improvement now and I hope he's back home with you soon, Janet

Yes, the sling looks complicated! - jamy wrote:

Janet I reckon he was injured 2 months ago, and since then he's had 2 operations and must have been in constant pain and discomfort. He's a real fighter and deserves everything I can do for him! I hope I can bring him home tomorrow!

| HE'S HOME!HERCULES IS BACK! And there's more good news: The bill was only the price of the anaesthesia, the X-rays, materials, meds, food, etc. THE TWO SURGEONS AND THE AVIAN VET DIDN'T CHARGE A CENT FOR THEIR SERVICES! Now that's what I call a Christmas present! When I picked him up there were two interns with the avian vet. When I greeted Hercules with 'There you are, you little hobo! What did I say about staying out for days at a time!', they cracked up laughing. They were clearly thrilled and moved by Hercules, his fighting spirit, and the incredible efforts of so many dedicated people who helped him. No matter how professional they tried to look, they couldn't help grinning from ear to ear... And neither can I! Fresh off the press: He's in the basket, honest! Eating and drinking, as always! See for yourselves: | |

| Thanks, guys! Cindy, couldn't stop laughing at your woo-hoo emoticon. So funny! Well, when the vet said Hercules has been pecking hard, he wasn't kidding! Hercules has become absolutely vicious! I'm thinking of hiring him out as a guard dog! But seriously, it's understandable he thinks humans are horrible creatures that inflict pain, so he does the same to them. Not only does he peck really hard, but he pinches any bit of flesh or skin he can get hold of, and then, without letting go, shakes his head from side to side to do as much damage as possible!   My daughter said 'The more you do for him the scarier he gets! Imagine what would have happened if you'd bought him a villa in the south of France!' | |

| Photo of Hercules's leg -- I'm posting the link, not the photo, because it is graphic and scary-looking. The black parts are made of resin 'cement'. https://2img.net/h/i333.photobucket.com/albums/m381/Skbllz/Pigeons/Hercules/DSCNB3656-r600.jpgHe looks like he's been through a war: there are numerous hair-line cracks on his beak, lots of feathers missing on his face, near the base of the beak, and his wattles are grey and pink -- why? Is it because of the anaesthesia? | |

| Oh poor Hercules. I wonder if all the natural flora in his system has been destroyed with ansthesia and antibiotics. | |

| Oh my goodness! Bless Hercules' little birdie heart. Has the vet said when the pins would be removed? Bless you as well Teresa. The stress and worry must be overwhelming at times. I hope the rest of the healing process goes without any problems. Sending you both a BIG . | |

The very prolonged use of antibiotics worries me. Between operations, I gave him a 2-day break with probiotics after each 7 days on antibiotics, but it's now been 2 months, and the instructions are to keep administering them until told otherwise.

| If you can find red palm oil and mix it with his seeds that may help his recovery and vitamin deficiency without interfering with antibiotics. It has high content keratin and vitamins E and D, much higher than carrots and other vegies. I use it when birds are long time on AB’s and for slow growing babies. | |
