| I have been following a baby pigeon in my feral flock since yesterday morning. Doesn't look like it has its parents with it. It could fly but kept squeaking the whole time. It came to my ledge where i feed the other pigeons but i don't think it has learnt how to eat on its own. It kept rushing over to the other pigeons flapping its wings whenever they used to come to feed. I suspect it was begging to be fed. But it was getting pecked by them :For Shame: Yesterday night it slept on my ledge. When i saw the ledge today morning, i was shocked to see its poops. They looked real bad to me. Going by its poops, it looked to me that it is starving and maybe it has some other infection too Today morning it was the same story again...baby was squeaking to be fed, it was trying to peck some grains but i don't know if it could really eat. It again decided to take refuge on my ledge for the night. That's when i decided that we might as well take a chance in rescuing it. What if it starves to death? So I called Dev over and we managed to catch it. He has just taken it with him as I type this. We will be posting its pics once Dev reaches home and examines it to see if it has any other visible problem. Meanwhile I am posting pictures of its poops. This was taken some time back when we caught it. Yesterday it looked worse than this and the amount of poop (similar to look at) was huge. I was shocked to see that. Any idea going by the sight of it, is it a case of starvation? Also does it look like any other bacterial infection? It also had a whole lot of pigeon flies on it. Waiting for all your help and suggestions. Priya | |

| I just got the bird to my home. Was keeping it warm using warm water bottle and a heating pad. Bird seems to be active but really very skinny :( when I hold him / her in my hands, i can easily feel his / her bones :( After 1.45 hours of warmth, I feed him warm water mixed with Glucose and salt. It drank very little though. I have again kept the bird warm and will hydrate it after few hours again.
Charis: Yes, the poops are little stinky. I checked his / her beaks, both inside and outside, it looked pinkish. Bird does not seem to have external injuries also.

| Yes, I have metronidazole ('Metrogyl' in India) 400mg medicines with me. The bird weighs approximately 160grams as of now. Do we start with metronidazole? | |

| I would feed him first. Probably his crop is empty. Do not give him to much on first feeding. | |

Sure, I am just preparing some green peas (kept it soaking in water). I will hydrate this baby in another 30 mins and then feed around 5 to 10 green peas.

| These poops look more like coccidiosis, just keep in mind, I would check again after feeding though. Foamy poops are characteristic for cocci. | |

| I just hydrated the bird now. I also feed it two green peas soaked in water. I checked his crop and there is some food already in. I could not make it out what food was it exactly, I felt like some small seeds were there. So, I didn't want to feed anything more for few hours.
Cindy: My cam is not letting me click snaps :( some problem with it. I will have that fixed and post the pics very soon.
Plamenh: You are right, my bird's poops are very much similar to the one you posted. I will keep hydrating and feeding this baby for sometime and check his droppings. However, I have 2 or 3 "Appertex" tablets, so if needed (and if it is the right medicine) I can treat with these medicines.
Charis: Yes, I have 1 ml syringe with me.
Its 1AM here, so I will take rest for sometime and be back here :)

| Hey Guys, I am back here. I just hydrated this baby 1 hour ago. He is active. I also feed him around 4 green peas. But my worry is, I can still feel something in his crop. I am just hoping it is some seed and not some non-digestive thing like sand What do you guys suggest I can do next ? I am still keeping the baby warm using hot water bottles. | |

| Treat him for Cocci with Appertex, feed him with peas and let him calm. I would treat for canker and check for parasites. If he is geting active, that means he was starving mostly. | |

| Have you offered him seed to see if he will eat on his own? If he won't, please do hand feed him...a few pieces won't be enough...you need to get his crop at least half full. I can't help but wonder if you are feeling canker in the crop...it's hard for me to tell from the way you describe it and it could just be sand. If the baby were in my care, I would treat for canker and coccidia. For the canker, take 1/4 pill and grind it fine. Add the powder to 1cc of water and give the baby .20ccs one time a day for 5 days. You can also give the baby 1/2 of the Apertex 12 hours after the canker treatment and repeat it in 10 days. | |

| Thanks Plamenh & Charis. I will prepare the Metronidazole and feed it in next 30 minutes. Baby is not eating on it's own so I am hand feeding it. I am just praying that he does not have canker or any other problem I will check his crop again and see if there is any change or if I can feel anything better. Apart from that, baby is active and likes to drink water (I am using the feeder). Water is mixed with Glucose & little salt. I am hydrating it every 3 hours and also gradually increasing the number of seeds. | |

| Good work, Dev. From the pictures of the poop, this baby did have some food recenty because there was a lot of stool. A concern is getting enough food in the baby to get some weight on him. When you say you are getting seed in him...what does that mean or how many seeds? Do you have frozen or fresh corn available? How about dry dog or cat food? | |

How about dry dog or cat food? His crop feels better now. I do not feel the sand type particles inside it. As you said, he might have eaten some food recently which was getting digested slow. As of now, I am feeding him around 10-15 green peas per feeding and I repeat it every 3 hours. I am very gradually increasing the seeds so that I don't over feed him. Yes, fresh corn is available here and I will be getting it in some time. I will feed him cron as well.

| The baby is little more active. The moment I open his cage, he jumps & comes out. He likes to be left outside cage than being inside I have been feeding green peas and chickpea soaked in water. I just got fresh corn, so I will start feeding that as well. I am going to continue hydrating him and keeping him warm. I have feed him Metronidazole as suggested by Charis. After 4 hours from now, I will also feed him 1/2 Appertex tablet. | |
