| Recieved a call this morning from an older couple who kept a few pigeons and they have a pair that refuse to care for their newly hatched baby so I was asked to come take it to hand feed. We in fact gave this couple a pair of our Egyptian Swifts so the husband would have something to occupy his time, they are in their 70's.
So now I have a tiny weak baby in our incubator, luckly I am trying to incubate 3 tortoise eggs so the incubator is nice & warm. Can they share the incubator? They are both in seperate containers. Incubator is set at 89 degrees.
I've fed the baby a runny Exact forumla as soon as we got home.
I really hate handfeeding babies this young so any input would help.

| Bless you for helping this little one get a start, Robin. I'm afraid I won't be much help as far as advice goes on feeding a newborn as I've never had to do it. Do you maybe have a pair of pijjies that would foster the baby? | |

Do you maybe have a pair of pijjies that would foster the baby? I'm afraid to put it in with any pairs until it gets a bit stronger. Maybe tomorrow I'll try with one of our RN dove pairs, we keep these in the house and this way I can keep a close eye on the baby.

| I just noticed this thread. Taking care of baby Pigeons is very easy if you can keep them warm enough. I keep the incubator between 95 and 98 degrees but if the baby in your care feels warm enough, food is moving through and it's pooping, the temperature is probably ok. Keep in mind though that Pigeons have a body temp of 106. I don't know abou the eggs...do you have any humidity in the incubator? | |

I don't know abou the eggs...do you have any humidity in the incubator? Thanks Charis. The temp. has been 89 - 90 degrees, it's nest of paper shredded paper towel is warm and the baby isn't acting cold, healthy pink & warm to the touch. The last 3 feedings have been mostly warmed water with probotics and just a touch of exact. Poor baby was very dehydrated by the time I got the call no poop yet though, should I be worried? Will I have to feed the baby through the night? I've read conflicting info... one says yes the other no. I have two containers with water in them for the eggs so the humidity is high. The eggs are in a seperate container in the incubator and they are clean.

| Yes you will need to feed through the night until the baby opens his eyes. Gradually thicken the formula and feel free to call me if you need to. | |

| Thanks Cindy & Priya Well we made it through the first night Still feeding a very weak solution of exact, water & probotics. How long do I keep adding the probotics? The baby did a poop last night so that was a big relief to me. I'm a bit nervous about this baby because it's been about 20 yrs. since I've had to feed one this young! | |

| Hi Robin, What a tiny little bundle you've got there! I would have been petrified if I had to look after one so young, and I'm very happy to hear that he's doing well. The name's great, too! So funny what you said about your husband being official baby holder because you've got cold hands! I have to put mine under running hot water before I pick my youngsters up! | |
