| This is a little squeaker that found it's way to Kim's yard. She caught him on the 3rd. I believe what initially caught her eye was his right eye looked to be 'stretched' and it does. Probably because there aren't any feathers around it.The left side is a mess. She suspected canker and started him on Spartrix. Bless his little birdie heart, he's eating, drinking and pooping like a trooper and has a wing slap like nobodys business. Any other thoughts or suggestions? She sent me the following photos to review and I agree with her suspicion. Cindy | |

| I think that is an eye infection that needs to be treated with Baytril or some other antibiotic...or a topical antibiotic. Our Hawkeye's eye socket has looked like that occasionally.
Canker can invade the sinuses through the slot in the top of the mouth, but I think that the eye orbit would be too far from the digestive tract and too exposed and inhospitable for the organism to survive.
But my usual suggestion applies here: send the photo to Dr Walker!
This is from his book on Pigeon Health and Management:
"It is important not to confuse infection in other parts of the body with canker. Trichomonads, particularly because of their fragility, can only infect the digestive tract and associated structures. Pigeons are very restricted in their response to infection. The white blood cells lack many of the enzymes (called lysosomes) that are normally found in mammals and therefore cannot produce pus. For this reason, no matter what the site of infection, the resultant reaction often looks like a canker infection. Bacterial (or other) infections of the skin, feet and eye etc. for this reason are often confused with canker because of their appearance.

| I think sending Dr Walker a picture is a great idea. Do you happen to have his email address, Cynthia? would be a good one to have on hand. | |

| This is Kim's reply to your post, Cynthia. I have enroxil and I have been spraying his eye with collodial silver. Do I stop the canker med and start him on enroxil. I do have an anti-biotic eye oinment. | |

| John is the one that has communicated with him most recently, so I will ask him to post it here and to start a thread in our resources section, there may be others that we want to add.
What has Kim been medicating the baby with for canker, and for how long? I would do the canker "sniff test" before making any decision on stopping medication . I have no knowledge of Enroxil and haven't found it in my formulary. I usually use synulox/clavamox or Baytril, like Kim I bathe the eye with colloidal silver and or tincture of euphrasia . The homeopathic medicine Euphrasia has worked very well for eye infections that don't respond to antibiotics.

| Hi Kim,
If you know the dose for Enroxil, please start the pigeon on that. Also wash his eye gently with warm water. I would soak a piece of cotton wool (I can't remember what you call it overe there) in warm water and hold it on the eye for a while like a compress.

| Here is the photo Kim sent me last evening. It seems as though something is going on with both eyes. It looks like his entire eye has been displaced from the socket. | |

| Well, there is certainly something building up the pressure behind the eye. This is one that I would take to the vet.

| enroxil is 7.5 mg and I have sterile gauze I could use to soak the one eye. I can't afford to take him to the vet. What do you think a rehabber would do? | |

What do you think a rehabber would do? If there is pressure caused by swelling, Nancy could probably give him a shot of Dexamethasone to help relieve the swelling.

| You know how Nancy and I get along. Last time I saw Nancy was with Tripp and his leg. She wanted to keep him so she will want to keep this one also. She won't just give him a shot and give him back. How do I get him to Nancy? | |

| At the least...it would help if you picked up a kitchen scale so that you can weight the bird. You have enough sick birds coming to you that it would help if you we able to give you an absolutely appopriate dose. With the very ill bird I had with canker, the canker had gotten into the sinus area and was so extensive that it had pushed the eyes forward into a bulge. I think the suggestion to email the all pictures to Dr. Walker is a good thing to do right now. | |
